My HR10 died yesterday after nearly flawless operations since I bought it.
My machine made a call Sunday eve. I got up during the night to see that the TV screen was idicating a download in process. In the AM I turn on the TV and see the Gray power up screen. I tried but could not get it past this screen again.
This is more than coincidence, maybe not intentional, but my HR10 died as a result of the software "upgrades".

It's probably nothing specific to this upgrade. There are a certain number of failures with every upgrade. Essentially it's moving the operating system to a different part of your hard drive. If that part of the hard drive happens to have uncorrectable flaws. I just wish Tivo would change the process so that if the new partition fails to boot it tries the original. That way they might be able to get the machine operational on the existing version and notify the user that their box has a problem.

Agreed -- and why not put embedded linux on a 32MB ROM chip on the mobo to handle upgrades AND cases where a drive is toast. Basically, drop a new drive in, and the embedded linux formats the drive, calls home, gets the OS and moves on.

I've talked to a half a dozen former tivo users who had drive failures, called TiVo, gotten quotes for repair services and promptly switched to other DVRs because the repair cost > switching cost. Tivo should get smart about this -- discount the repairs to avoid losing their customer base. Add that to the list of things that TiVo should be doing, but isn't...

Back to the OP's question -- try downloading and using a diagnostic CD from the drive's manufacturer in a PC. If no physical probs, re-format the drive and use instant cake to get back to 3.15f. Very stable software.

I lost one of my HR10-250 units when it upgraded to 6.3 and had the same symptoms as yours. I unplugged the phone from the other 3 till they get this crap worked out.

And some think Earl is the only *beta* tester posting here....when in reality we all are.
