So the local CompUSA has one last HR10-250, and they're selling it for $250.
I currently have an R10, so no HD. I do have a TV set that can do 1080i though.
Now, I'd need a new dish for HD, and/or an OTA for local channel HD. Also, I don't know about buying a box that's been used as the display model at a store.
Is this a good deal? Any pitfalls about the whole thing? Are the tivo HD boxes going to be obsolete within like 2-3 months? Anything else I'm not aware/thinking of?

No they aren't going to be obsolete in 2 - 3 months... more like 2 to 3 years if that. $250 is a steal. Tivo's are way better then the new crap DTV released.

Chances are that HR10-250 will be gone by tomorrow and you'll regret not having grabbed it right away.

If so, then so be it. It's been there for like 3 weeks though...

Be very careful about the pricing. I ran into a similar situation and bought 2 new HR10s for $300 each at Best Buy. It wasn't until after I activated them that Directv told me that i actually leased them and i did not own them. That means that i would have to return them to directv even if i canceled. Best Buy told me i bought them and my receipt said nothing about a lease, but D* doesn't care and wont change it. otherwise they will charge you $400 per box when you cancel. They also started me on a new 2 year contract when i activated them and never told me. Very shady tactics.

EXACTLY the kind of stuff I was worried about! I will call DTV beforehand and ask them what the deal is. If they're going to pull that kinda stuff, I at LEAST want a free new dish!
I don't know that I mind returning the thing to them if I cancel DTV. I mean, IF I cancel it'll be because I can't use TiVo with them anymore, and that probably won't happen for a few years. So, hell with it. By then I'll just get a Series4 or whatever (:

If anyone is interested, I got the HR10-250 for $200 (they were missing the remote, but I have a Harmony). I had to extend my DTV contract by 2 years, but they're giving me a 5LNB dish for no extra charge! HD World, here I come!

The 5LNB dish does nothing to help you out with the HR10 over the 3LNB dish..........
But I'll give you 220 for it :-)
