View Full Version : How long should a daily call take?

I just got an HR10-250 that is 3.1.5f and I wanted to get it up to 6.3b. So I plugged it in and hooked up a phone line... will that do it? NOTE... the sat cables are NOT plugged in (do they need to be?) and the DVR is not activated yet, in fact, not even the card is inserted. Basically the only thing that is in is the phone line, because I wanted to get it to 6.3b before even activating it because the 3.1.5f is so slow compared to my series 1. So I forced a call... its been saying "Downloading" for a long time now... how long is the FIRST call supposed to take? am I even downloading 6.3b at this point? It'll cost me an extra $10 to activate the unit which doesn't make sense if its not even usable... yeah, I know... I'm a cheap bastard :).

I plugged the phone line into one of my HR10s on Wednesday night, and it only downloded for a few minutes -- then I got "Pending Restart." Tonight I tried it on my other machine, and it has been downloading for well over an hour.

My guess is -- and this is only a guess -- is that the 6.3b slices had already been downloaded by satellite to my first box, but probably not to my second. Thus, my second one is likely now downloading (via telephone) 6.3a, since that is no longer available via satellite from what I hear. Not sure how long this will take -- I'm going to bed soon, and in the morning I'll see what's in there.

Most downloads of new versions by phone take 1.5-2 hours. It is downloaded in slices, so if the connection is dropped, it does not need to start from the beginning.

My long-unplugged box w/ 3.1.5f took a couple of hours to download the upgrade to 6.3a. Unfortunately a few days later forced calls haven't upgraded it to 6.3b.

My tivo finally finished downloading overnight, and it only got it to 6.3a. I guess I'll have to hook up the sat cables in an empty bedroom and let it download there for a week and try to get the 6.3b going.

Thanks for the info. I gave up and went to bed, and when I got up, checked it and I had 6.3a. Rats. Tried forcing a call, but the results were the same. I'll just sit back and wait for 6.3b to roll in.

I stuck with 3.1.5f but decided tonight to try my luck with 6.3b. So I hooked it up to the phone line for the first time since Sept. and I got 4 hours into it downloading before I finally came here and saw that people were downloading 6.3a. So I unplugged it before it finished. Argh!
I will not put up with 6.3a.

I think this brings up an interesting point -- if someone is attempting to upgrade from 3.1.5 to 6.3b, check to see how long the phone call lasts. If it takes more than, oh, 15 minutes, it's probably likely that it is going to upgrade to 6.3a instead. At that point, I'd yank the cord!

When my first machine went from 3.1.5 to 6.3b, the phone call only lasted about 5 minutes -- from there, I got the "Pending Restart" and 6.3b installed upon rebooting it. On my other one, the phone call went for HOURS, and I ended up with 6.3a.

My guess is, and if someone knows the truth I'll be happy to hear it, is that if the machine isn't authorized to grab 6.3b, it will go for 6.3a -- and since that isn't being sent via satellite anymore, it has to get it via the phone call.

Argh! I just looked at it this morning and despite the phone cord being unplugged, it STILL thinks it's downloading....

Now I'm afraid to reboot it.

I think that's exactly right.

I'm stuck on 6.3a on a box I plugged back in after a few months. Wish D* would just go ahead and authorize everyone to get 6.3b, given that initial indications are that there are no showstopper bugs. Heck, they weren't shy about pushing 6.3a out long after some serious issues were identified with it.

I've tried daily calls for 2 - 3 days now, and apperently am only authorized to run the buggy 6.3a :(
