I tried to watch this on BBCA and they had a laugh track and since I had not seen the first or second season, the characters did not make much sense. Is it worth getting the first season DVD set and watching them?

I'm not sure the characters have ever made any sense. There have been some funny moments, though. I wouldn't buy the previous episodes, I would rent or Netflix them.

Yes! Black Books is great. However, you're best off starting with season 1.

I have Netflix, so I wouldn't buy them. I hope the DVD versions don't have a laugh track. This is so lame. I never understood why they had them. Either it is funny or it isn't, fake laughter doesn't help at all.

These come up on BBC America occasionally, although I haven't had a Season Pass or ARWL for it in a while. I've never seen the third season. Seasons one and two are hilarious though. If they had a laugh track it wasn't obnoxious enough to bother me.
