I have had on and off freezing problems with my HDVR2 for the past 6 months so I bought a new WD 250GB Caviar SE drive to upgrade it.
I am now wondering if this hew hard drive is bad as well.
I tried pretty much anything I could find out there to back up the image from my dying HDVR2 (MFSTOOLS, PTVUpgrade, Weaknees) and they all failed because the Maxtor drive in the HDVR2 constantly caused errors.
Well, the Maxtor drive finally died completely last night so I tried installing InstantCake on the new WD drive. It seemed to run successfully. I installed it in the HDVR2 and it allowed me to do the guided setup but then froze after about 10 mins. I rebooted and the same thing happened again.
I started to wonder if the new drive was bad too so I ran the WD diagnostic tool against it and it gave me the following message:
PLEASE CONTACT TECHNICAL SUPPORT - DRIVE 0 @ PORT 0x01F0 REPORTED A SMART ERROR.
Then it lists the following SMART ATTRIBUTES followed by a Warning message:
ID NAME VALUE THRESH WORST
1 Raw Read Error Rate 200 51 200
3 Spin Up Time 213 21 45
4 Start/Stop Count 100 0 100

7 Seek Error Rate 178 51 171

196 Relocation Event Count 1 0 1
197 Current Pending Sector Count 200 0 182
198 Offline Uncorrectable Sector Count 100 0 253
199 UltraDMA CRC Error Rate 200 0 200
200 Multi Zone Error Rate 100 51 253
Warning! One or more current or worst-case attributes are below threshold.
So is my drive bad? I have already sent an email to WD about this but haven't received a response yet.
