Assuming you want to record analog cable channels, add a splitter before the 8300HD on the cable TV line, feed the RF in to the S1.

Use S-Video if possible connecting the S1 to your TV.

If you need/want to record any of your digital channels, you'll need another cable box (non-DVR).

Since somebody else has already answered it seriously, I'll give you the smartass answer. Throw away or sell the S1. Throw away or sell the 8300 hd cable box. Buy a Series 3. Add an HDMI switch from monoprice.com and connect both the S3 and the DVD player to it, and then a cable from the HDMI switch to the TV (assuming your TV has only a single HDMI port, otherwise you won't need the switch). Except for the money you just spent, you'll be glad you did the upgrade.
