Ok so, My girlfriend, just bought a Tivo S2 80gb Single Tuner and a yr sub for me, for xmas.

I have a Direct tv D11-100, I am a channel surfer, and I know about all the control difficulties, I am watching the paterson tech site for an update to the translator.

I just ran accross a coupon that will give me the Directtv DVR dual tuner for free and 5.99 a month for the service.

The girlfriend is extra sensitive, WHAT SHOULD I DO!?!?!?! I most likely want to get the Direct Tv DVR. Is it worth her hurt feelings to ask her to return it? Can she even return it? I don't think the box is even to her house yet.

she could refuse shipment and then call TiVo to cancel. it likely will take some time on the phone and if it turns into a credit card hassle of reversing the charges then you will have one angry girlfriend.

can you regift the Stand Alone to someone?

On another note, do you think it's worth the hassle to return it, or should I just use the Tivo.

I am very Tech savvy, I have never had a DVR before, so I'm not used to any one system. Should I go through the trouble to have her return the Tivo, she is sensitive beyond belief especially when it comes to this kind of stuff, she feels like she can never please me, asking her to return this will just solidify this problem. I think I may just live with the Tivo and learn to love it. Sure hope paterson gets around to the usb translator.

ding ding ding... We have a winner!!!

This is a gift, which I bet she put some thought into.

She might just know what you would like more, then you!

Make it work. TiVo is grand. The interface just blows away anything else out there.......

Does she live with you? If not, set it up at her house so you can enjoy it when you're over there since DTV gives you one or something like that when you present it to her. Either way she seems like a pretty cool girlfriend, so you should probably keep her around.

From a females perspective I'd say keep the Tivo. If you later on you still want the dual tuner, set the Tivo up on a second tv if you have one. It's totally not worth hurting her feelings over.

Also the SA TiVo's offer a few more features that the DTV ones don't. TiVo2Go, Music playback, photos and stuff.

She is a cool girlfriend indeed. We take good care of one another, I think I am going to keep with the Tivo, then get the HR20 later on for the HD tv in the basement.

She doesn't live with me, we have a pretty odd situation, I am only 20yr old, I just bought my first house, so I live alone, her parents aren't all about her living away from home yet, she's 20 as well. We have been together for 2 1/2 yrs, it's pretty annoying that she can't live with me until we're married, something I want her to get out of school before.

So because I am going to end up keeping the Tivo, I suppose I will be around here for a while, Hi All.

Maybe she wants to hook you TiVo to break you of that :D

Trust me, she's even more of a channel surfer than I am.

One of the good things about Tivo is that it will break you of that habit. At least it did for me. When I sit down to watch TV I don't have to channel surf anymore, because what I want to watch it already there.
The more you use the Tivo, make sure to give thumbs up and down to your shows, the more you'll find that channel surfing is a thing of the past. :D

Just goes to show everyone uses their TiVo in different ways. We still surf and we have Suggestions turned off (and thus don't bother with Thumbs Up/Down) on both units.

Ok all this has me a little more excited, I'm just hoping Paterson gets that translator to work right, I have a D11-100 and an H20-100, so for now I suppose I have to use the IR blaster:(

I have a large media server(750gb) are these newer S2 units hackable at all to be able to watch some of my media on the tivo?

One you've converted your video to Mpeg2 you can load it onto the TiVo to watch. You'll need to connect your TiVo to your PC network however. As for music and photos, you play those directly off of your server using the TiVo Desktop software.
