Think I accidently posted this in the wrong section the first time...

Ok so ive been looking to buy a Tivo for a friend and after seeing being able to get one FREE after the rebate, i want to jump on it...just one question. What is the "fine print"? Does anyone know? Do they have to keep it active for a certain amount of time so I get my $220 bucks back? Happy Holidays

If you want to give Tivo as a gift may I recommend the gift packages http://www.tivo.com/2.9.asp or build your own gift package http://www.tivo.com/2.0.gift.boxes.step.1.asp

With the gift options the subscription will begin when they want to activate the Tivo rather then when you purchase the Tivo. Also you will not have to mess with the rebates.

As far as your question goes. If you file for the rebate then the rebate will be held for 30 days to ensure the Tivo was not returned. You will also have to sign up for at least a year commitment and if that is broken a termination fee will be accessed. Unless the person you are giving the Tivo to already has a Tivo this method with the rebate should probably not be utilized as the billing and account information will be in your name for at least a year until the commitment is up and then you will have to transfer ownership to the person you gave the gift to.

Just remember-

Once any prepaid months of service run out, they'll be responsible for the bill from then on, and TiVo becomes the gift that keeps on taking. :p

This is true, but by then the Tivo will have taken over the household. My GF has been watching my Tivo for the past 2 or 3 months now. She is at home for the winter break and is going through withdrawal. I was like that until I got my Tivo. Cold sweats, shaking, trying to find the dang fast forward button in my TV remote. It is like crack, there should be rehab for Tivo. :D

Tivo gift advice... Don't give one unless you can figure out a way to put lifetime on it.

Sounds like maybe you were planning on just giving a TiVo without any subscription? If so, better to make sure your friend is willing to pay for the service. If price is no object then it would be worth looking into a lifetime unit on eBay or from some other reseller. I would think your friend would rather have a used lifetime rather than a new one he or she had to pay for monthly - at least I would if I were your friend.
