I just bought the Dungeons & Dragons series on DVD yesterday. This was one of my favorite cartoons growing up. This is one of those series I loved, but wasn't expecting to ever see on dvd. A couple of the early episodes were even written by Paul Dini (from Batman: The Animated Series).

(Actually this seems to have been a good month for obscure TV series on DVD I never thought I'd see come out, with "Grosse Pointe" and "Police Squad")

I just hope I'm not disappointed - can this live up to fond memories of 23 years ago?

This is the part that I am afraid of. I have fond memories of the cartoon as well and am afraid of watching them now and being disappointed.

I still have them archived on VHS from when I was a kid and have watched them within the last couple years. I thought they held up well. At least trust me that this is not like Thundercats ;)

Here are some reminiscences from writer Mark Evanier (http://www.povonline.com/cols/COL145.htm) about the "D&D" cartoon.

I bought the full-series box set over a year ago in Region 2 format. :o

The one thing that bothered me about the show was that they always had a way to go home, and didn't, for some stupid reason.

'Course, that would be the end of the show, of course.

It's too bad there wasn't a final episode (where they either did get home, or didn't, and stuck there forever...with a fast-forward to long lives...ie Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe). I think the least the network could have done was let the guy make a final episode. True about every series, actually. Just to give them some closure.
