View Full Version : No link light on Cachecard

Trying to install a Cachecard v2.2 on my Thomson UK Tivo. Have got the drivers loaded on the hard disk, and on boot I get the usual errors due to not having any RAM installed on the card, but I can't connect to the Tivo, and I don't get a link light either on the Cachecard or my ADSL (wired) router.
Have searched all the usual places for a solution without joy. Any suggestions?
Does the link light usually come on as soon as there is a physical connection, or just when drivers are loaded and a network connection is made?
Thanks,
Chris.

just when drivers are loaded and a network connection is madeYes, exactly that.
However, it doesn't have to be a valid connection - just a physical one. If the IP addresses are all up the swanee you'll still get a link light.
Are you using a crossover cable by any chance?

No, its a straight-through (and I've tried 2 different cables, which both work fine from my PC to the router).
IP addresses are the default ones -
i.e.
ip address: 198.168.1.200
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
gateway 198.168.1.1 (ip address of router)

Have you removed the TiVo foot at the corner where the cachcard is fitted? Sometimes the centre plug of the foot can prevent the card from fitting correctly.

Yes, I'd already cut it down (following Steve Conrad's instructions), and have just tried taking it out altogether. One thing I have noticed is that although the card goes all the way on to the connectors, it will still rock forwards and backwards slightly.
Another thing I should maybe mention is that I'm fitting the Cachecard because the Tivo's modem blew during a thunder storm. I renamed the modem_test file and apart from not connecting to the network or making daily calls, the Tivo seems fine.

Yes, they normally do flex a bit and this can sometimes affect the connections with the motherboard, but if you have wiggled it and are still not getting a link light then the drivers may not be loaded correctly.
Did you use nic_install to load them, and do you normally see a load of messages on the screen during the bootup sequence?

I ran nic_install with the --force option. I've looked at the kernel log and it says something about turbonet2 drivers being loaded.
I get the SiliconDust boot screen, which gives me various errors about drivers not being loaded, but I understand this is usual if there is no RAM on the card.
thanks for your help, by the way!

Did you install the cachecard drivers with level 3 debug (self test)? This closes down the network connection after testing the card.
What is the contents of your /etc/rc.d/rc.net file?

Hey Mr Blindlemon,
Do you remember I had a similar problem with one of my TiVo units? No matter what I did the link would never work, however the cache was fine and when I moved the card into another TiVo it was all fine.
I know this isnt a lot of help but I never did find out what the problem actually was... :(

I guess there's always the possibility of a motherboard fault...
However, I suspect this is something simpler than that.

What location are you, I have a working tivo with cachecard, would be happy to trial and error with my card/tivo to see where the problem lies??
Others may help also..
My fee's are low, just a cuppa will do?

rc.net included below. I did have it set to debug test mode, but I've reset it and retried to no avail.
I've contacted 6022Tivo about possibly meeting up to swap cards etc - may help to rule out dodgy cachecard and/or dodgy tivo.
#
#!/bin/sh
#
if /sbin/insmod -f /lib/modules/turbonet2.o macaddr=00:0B:AD:EA:8E:BF ; then
export DYNAMIC_NET_DEV=eth0
/sbin/ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.3 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
/sbin/route.tivo add default gw 192.168.1.1 netmask 0.0.0.0

Can't see anything wrong with that.
Unfortunately, I have found that a very small percentage of cachecards received from the US arrive here with faults, usually in the networking department. That's why I test every card in a TiVo beofre I send it out.

Sorry I didn't get back to you. I am not in your area, and about an hour or so from Manchester also... Are you still having problems?
