When additional HD channels are added to Directv will they be in MPEG4? And if so then our Tivo HR10 units will be useless. Does anyone know?

Yes, and why didn't you ask this in the HDTiVo forum?

The HR10's won't suddenly become useless; they'll simply not be able to receive those new channels.
If you have multiple receivers now, just add an HR20 to the mix; you'll be able to record or watch any of the MPEG-4 channels and can still use your familiar HR10(s) for everything else.

Well, you did write it with a rather sarcastic sentence formation. :)

Typically those should simply be reported to a moderator; no public reply made because the moderator would delete the original message, and a public response would just escalate the off-topic color. The person making the comment would get a warning or temporary ban.

Thanks for the idea. I'm not exactly sure what config you're thinking about. I have an R10 in my home office and the HR10 (to arrive on Wednesday) will be in the family room.
The office TV is not HD and so would not require the HR10. Are you thinking of having both R10 and HR10 connected to the HD TV at the same time? I'm not sure how that would work, but I would be interested in a wiring config. I plan on keeping the HR10 even if it becomes SD only to take advantage of the HDMI output that the R10 doesn't have. I'd like to hear some suggestions.

The R10 is a TiVo Series 2; the HR10 is an HD TiVo. Neither can get MPEG-4/Ka-band signals. I presume you really mean you currently have an HR10 and you have an HR20 coming, right?
Yes, I'm suggesting having both the HR10 and HR20 connected to the HD television at the same time, either directly if your display has multiple inputs or through a switching device like one of these: http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10110&style=
An extra receiver only costs $4.99/month in mirroring fees. Odds are your total cost per month with an extra receiver cost will be less than other alternatives (like going to cable and getting a standalone Series 3). Many people already have multiple DVRs on their main display; for them they could just swap one out for an HR20 if they didn't want to add an HR20 instead.

Thanks for your idea. And yes I meant the possibility of both the HR10 and HR20 in some way connected at the same time. I thought of it but was unsure if splitting the coax would present a problem with signal input level. Or did you have in mind switching the coax instead of "Y" connecting them? If the coax were switched would the open receiver bomb by not seeing a signal? I have two HDMI ports on my new Sony 60" LCD. And I can't see why using the dual inputs would be a problem. The extra $5 / month isn't a problem. It would mean paying for two additional receivers due to the office R10. I would like to leave one of the HDMI ports available for the DVD player / recorder.
I returned an HR20 to DTV after becoming so frustrated I almost pitched out the front door. I was so angry I didn't even care about the $300 loss. They agreed to replace it at a future time when the problems were corrected. But that agreement will probably not be honored.

You'd need to run separate coax lines for the two tuners of the HR20; you could use a splitter on the OTA signal currently going to your HR10. Switching your existing 2 lines to the HR10 isn't practical since it defeats the ability of the unit to record without manual intervention.

The only other concern would be having DTV drop support for Tivo after investing so much in receivers. Does anyone think they are going to drop support for Tivo?

I don't think they're going to drop support for TiVo. They've continued to support systems like Ultimate TV. They've also signed a deal with TiVo to support it for some years. Its just the HD which is going away for TiVos.
