If I got a slingbox, can I go to yahoo or tivo and record a show from my computer? Or, is it just a way to watch the shows?
sorry for the newbie stuff....

It will allow you stream the shows "live". To record a show you will need to use TiVo Desktop or a similar method.

Thanks, so if I understand it correctly, I probably would be better off getting a used stand alone tivo from ebay and then I can use the computer programming feature which is what I want.... to be able to tell it to record something while I am away and on my computer....
Right?

Ohh.....so you want to schedule recording while away from home?
THATS EASY!
TiVo has an ONLINE web utility that allows you to sdchedule recordings from ANYWHERE you have internet access.

Slingbox allows you to watch the output of your TiVo, so you can do everything. Watch shows, schedule recordings, change season passes, it's like you're watching your TV.
Of course that is rather annoying if someone is trying to WATCH tv while you're doing this.
You can also log into your TiVo account online at www.tivo.com and schedule recordings, assuming you have a "regular" TiVo and not a DirecTV unit.

Ellie has just purchased a Toshiba TiVo DVD unit, and may stick with "TiVo Basic".
If she does, I don't believe she'll be able to do any of the online stuff.

Now I feel bad. I had the direct tv tivo and could not do any online scheduling and felt so proud to win that auction for the Toshiba. Now you say I cannot do the stuff I want with it?
Dang, I thought I had it down. My dsl (sbc global/yahoo) says if I have a tivo sub. that I can do it..... is it not so? I live in the sticks and just got dsl which is why I wanted to do online scheduling.

Can you also watch the programs, from slingbox, on your TV, or is it just on your computer??

If you keep TiVo Basic, you won't be able to do Online Scheduling.

If you buy a slingbox (which was the original question) you certainly will be able to do scheduling online.

Technically, yes, you'd be scheduling from the TiVo by controlling it via the Slingbox. You still would not be able to use TiVo Central Online.

Slingbox allows you to control your tv and TiVo online from any internet-capable pc. Therefore, you wouldn't be able to watch on your tv unless it was connected to a pc.

Slingbox and the TiVo/Yahoo online scheduline are exclusinve. Having a Slingbox won't enable on a Basic equipped unit, but will let you set up recordings over the TiVo interface itself.

but why confuse Ellie
1. the Tohiba TiVo in TiVo basic will not allow for online scheduling via TiVo Online. You will just be able to record shows manually by time channel or from the 3 days of Guide Data on the TiVo DVR directly.
2. If you up it to a TiVo subscription then you get online scheduling, season passes and wishlists
3. in either case you can buy a slingbox and you will see the output from the TiVo on any internet connected and enabled with the slingbox applet PC and I think they are betaing some portable devices.
4. with that slingbox connection you can watch and then delete shows, and do all the scheduling on the TiVo itslef you want as you see its output and have a software reresented remote control interface.
5. With a TiVo DVR you can hook it up to more than one output as all outputs are basically enabled at the same time.
Be careful though - on the Toshiba TiVo there is only one composite out so you will need to have component or S-video inputs on the TV and you will need audio splitters for the sound so you can send one pair to the sling and one to the TV for component or S-video. Barring those hookups you will have to use COAX hookup to the TV. Of course with the DVD in the Toshiba you will want to use Component out to the TV if possible.
