I have a series 2 with lifetime service and was interested in getting a second series 2 for my daughter who lives two houses down from me.

1) Can Tivo tell that the boxes are not in the same house or do they even care if the two boxes are not in the same house? (they would have the same cable provider.) I know this might not be totally ethical, but we are blood related. : )

2) Am I still eligable for the MSD if I buy a tivo from a place like amazon and get the rebate for the total price? Or if I do this, do I have to pay full price for the service?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Many affluent people have multiple homes hence multiple Tivos.

Do you help pay for your daughters housing?

The terms of contract state that for other Tivos to qualify for the MSD they must be at the same address.

My Tivos must not have understood the contract very well because I now have 6 tivos under MSD, they are now in 4 different houses, 3 different video providers, two different states, 4 different IP addresses and I purchased them from from multiple sources- ebay, Tivo.com, Bestbuy.

So just make sure your address is used and the box lives "down the street". :D

This gets down to an 'if its against policy, but TiVo doesn't check, would you do it?' argument.

Actually in some cases it is mostly inertia. Different parts of a family come to visit. Folks go nuts over the Tivos and are invited to take them home to try it out for longer before buying. One month becomes one year etc. Mary my neighbor has has had the DT Tivo for a few days now.

Can't stop gabbing to me about how cool it is. She should go gab to someone else.

I'm sold.

You can ONLY get MSD through a retail purchased box. Buying a box direct from tivo is not eligible for MSD until after the contract is expired. When you buy it retail and get MSD, you still are eligible for the mail-in rebate.

so thats not a bad deal, if you coimmit 3 years MSD its 6.95 and you can get a free box or pay $50 for the box....
