Hello all…I just received my stock HD TiVo today that I bought from Weaknees (I also received my 42” Panny Plasma from CC to go with it as well…Whoo, Whoo!!!). After reading all of the comments on the site I have a question that I would appreciate everyone opinion on (S3 owners with and without problems!!)…because this is the early adoption stage for the S3 technology, what do people think about the Weaknees extended warranty (three years from the time of purchase for $79)? I realize that the people with S3 problems are going to be the most vocal and say that it should be purchased, but I would also like folks to chime in that have not had any problems as well. It seems that a lot of the problems have more to do with how the individual cable companies implement their cablecard technology (of the lack of training on the implementation of the cable cards) and that there have not been a lot of actual S3 TiVo boxes that were truly defective.
Am I assessing things correctly regarding the build quality of the S3 boxes at this stage or should the Weaknees warranty be given serious consideration because of the “newness” of the S3 technology????
TIA,
Dave

You're looking at 10% of the current retail price for 3 year protection from a company that's pretty reputable in these parts. I'd say go for it.

I was a very early adopter and got the BB warranty before the price went up. Now, I paid retail plus tax for my S3, but I did get a deal on the warranty and have had my S3 up and running since the Saturday after release. It was just too good a deal, but I still would have paid more for the peace of mind and knowing that TiVo generally does the right thing by its subscribers and allows transfers of lifetime to exchanged/replaced units, even when it's exchanged/replaced by a third party like BB or CC.

I am also interested in this warranty question. Plus, any thoghts on the similarly priced TiVocommunity store's warranty that is offered by Warrantech? I'd rather get the S3 at thTiVocommunity store because of the $120 price differential on the hardware....

For me it's pretty much a given that I'm gonna pop the case and upgrade the drive.
I expect any warranty to go out the window at that point.
My #2 S3 arrived, made it through guided setup and puked. I'm in the process of exchanging it now. I'm confident that if the box is solid out of the box I'll be in good shape. It's a heck of a gamble with a $800 piece of hardware though!

I think the warranty will help keep my wife happy since I won't want to get inside the thing for at least 3 years. :p

Neither of these poll options worked for me. I bought my S3 from CostCo just to get their unlimited return policy.
