We have Directv and both my son and I have DTivo units but he plans on moving out of the house and actually to another state. When he gets to his new location I understand that he will have to call DTV and get some kind of deal for a new subscriber which will probably end up with him getting one of DTV's dvr's not a Tivo.

My question, we actually have a third DTivo that needs a new harddrive which I plan to get a replacement for from Weaknees but could he take either it or the one he's currently using with him and use it instead of DTV's dvr he will probably get? Do I assume correctly that he will have to sign a two year commitment as a new subscriber?

Not sure about the 2-yr commitment, but Yes, he can take and use one of your existing DirecTivo DVRs.

So how does that work, when he signs up will they go ahead and send him a DTV Dvr and then he needs to keep it hooked up for a week, then call and have them disconnect it and then connect his DTivo, or what?

It should be easier ....
Just call DirecTV to set up your son's new account at his address and have them move your DirecTivo DVR to his account at the same time. You might even negotiate a free satellite dish installation at his place while you're at it.

Okay that's what I needed to know how this all worked as he will need a dish installed also. So if they will just move one of our DTivo DVR's to his account then they should offer to install the dish free or for a minimal amount?

As a new account customer, your son should be able to get the dish installed for free.

If you have used equipment they just charge you $20 bucks for an access card but no two year commitment. However for them to come install dish and any standard receiver's has a 1 year commitment to cover the cost.

You can buy a dish, install it yourself and plug it in. There is no need to involve DirecTV. The received does not know where it is and will work. Your local programing might not come in but you can keep the receiver on your account to save $$$. Just don't tell DTV.

Secondly, however, please be aware that this is not a friendly place for service thieves.

These people are clearly looking to act honestly. My suggestion would be that you attempt to learn from them.

Sorry, but ANYTIME you activate ANY new card, you get hit with a commitment, depending on the equipment you activated at the time, USED or not! If you activate a NEW card in any used Tivo's, it's 2 years.
(maybe you might be able to get that waived, but from mosts posts here, it generally doesn't happen...)

Let your son get setup with his own DirectV dish and receiver, but you can always use one of your receivers (with the $5 charge) and get your local programming for him at his new place. That would let him watch his "hometown" stations wherever he goes, and you are still being fair to for DTV at his place. My parents have DTV, but have two of my boxes so they can watch my channels.
