View Full Version : Guided setup problem - no service providers!

Today I had Sky installed after previously being connected to Telewest
cable.

I've gone into guided setup but haven't got very far - when I select the
'digital satellite + digital cable/digital terrestrial' option, then enter my
postcode, the TiVo dials up, connects ok and then tells me that there are no
service providers for my area!

I've tried numerous different postcodes from all around the country - same
result.

I've tried all the different options as to what I receive and the only
option that gives me any kind of service provider list (all no good of
course) is the 'aerial + digital cable' option. All the rest report no
service provider available.

I've spoken to TiVo support and they are puzzled - they say there are definitely
service providers listed for my area (North London) so they don't know why
they are not listed when my TiVo dials up. They said they'd ring me back but
that was three hours ago.

Has anyone had this fault before? I guess it must be something wrong at the
Tribune end? Very odd.

I'm now stuck in the guided setup loop so I don't know whether to unplug the
TiVo and start again.

Any advice welcome!

Try redoing GS selecting the 'aerial only' option and a random (but valid) postcode other than your own. Assuming that succeeeds, then do it again, but the second time choose the cable option and your own postcode.

There is a bug in the GS code that sometimes gets things screwed up when you go from one setup to another without going 'via' the aerial only option.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately in my case it just caused the unit to hang. I then tried rebooting it, unplugging it for a couple of minutes. Still no improvement - it just went back into guided setup and then through the same stages up to entering the postcode and then reporting no service providers.

In the end I unplugged the unit for one hour. After booting up and going into guided setup again - eureka, it worked properly! The correct service providers were listed and the system updated without error.

So if anyone else has the same problem - an extended amount of unplugged time seems to be the answer.

By the way, for the newer Sky boxes TiVo Support recommended to me to select Grundig as the make of box, no matter who the box manufacturer is. Mine is an Amstrad 55FH04 but it works fine on the Grundig setting.

Code for the IR blaster - either 20000 (medium) or 20006 (medium). I found that both worked, although the 20006 setting changed channels a bit faster.

Finally, when setting up for Sky Digital, TiVo Support told me to select the 'aerial and digital satellite' option.

Grundig code 20016 has been the suggested code for several years, now updated:

"Sky Digital Boxes

Supported: use code 20016 under manufacturer "Sky Digital" for all brands of Sky boxes. This will send the Sky key before each channel change to turn the box on. If you don't want the Sky key sent use 20006 instead (which will speed up channel changes slightly but you may loose recordings if your Sky box crashes and turns off)."

Thanks for the tip. Using Sky with TiVo is new to me so that website is very useful. It appears that the code info I got from the TiVo support guy was out of date!
