I was wondering how long it would take to run the disk diagnostics from the drive manufacturer's, but did not find any information here. So I thought I would report my results, for potential future users who search.
WD 250 GB, 66 minutes (note that it does the quick test first for 5 minutes, then prompts you to continue, so don't just walk away and come back in an hour).
SG 400 GB, 110 minutes.
It looks to me like 4 GB / minute is probably a good rule-of-thumb estimate.
These were both run from a bootable CD which loads a mini version of DOS (this bit about DOS is a guess on my part).
