After many years of being a loyal Tivo subscriber my unit started being unable to dial in for updates. After thinking about it I realized it might be since last month I switched my phone service to my local cable provider. I spent 1/2 hr on hold last night and finally gave up. I finally got thru this morning and was told the bad news Tivo does not support Digital phone service so my unit will no longer record anything! Tivo seemed to have my email address when it was email about new available products but I missed the one telling me about this issue.
I am so disappointed. I have recommended Tivo to everyone I know and alot of people have gone with digital recorders from their cable service but I have been hanging in there.
Guess it's time to give up the fight

Do you not have the ability to connect your TiVo to the internet?

Just get a wireless adapter and connect that way. No need for a phone at all.

Digital phone service? If its through your cable company then they are just using VOIP. I have Vonage, which is the same thing, and it can connect just fine. It might take some tweaking, but it will work.

my husband is on his way to radio shack to buy 75ft of cable. my main computer is in my family room and Tivo in my bedroom. I will have to run it this way for now but i just don't understand why Tivo doesn't work with digital phone service and why they never mentioned this anywhere! :(

TiVo doesn't "support" any type of phone service.

TiVo connects over phone lines. It's the phone lines that support the TiVo, not the other way around.

Often digital phone service providers will call their service "voice", meaning that the service can decently reproduce the sound of the human voice.

The far more subtle differences between the various tones used by modems? Those are sometimes NOT reproduced correctly.

There WAS no "issue" for TiVo to notify you on. If anything, your digital phone service should have told you that any dial-up modem equipment you have might not work any more.

THEY dropped the ball, not TiVo.

As someone mentioned, there's always connecting over the internet...

:( As I mentioned in my response to Private message, I am only going by what I was told this morning by TIVO customer service. And yes, I do realize the internet thing but, never had to go thru this hassle. Sorry if I am offending some of you,
not my intent but, was not thrilled with my customer service experience. It stopped working last night and since I could not get thru for over 20 minutes to a live agent hopefully some of you can understand it's alittle frustrating.

YOU SEEM ALITTLE ANGRY  I DON'T SEE A COPY OF YOUR LAST PRIVATE MESSAGE TO ME?
as I explained in my previous post I am only going by what I was told by TIVO
this morning :p

I have been one of the few that hangs on til the end, I still use Netflix since I feel they created the idea even though Blockbuster has offered me much better offers.
I am loyal and don't need you SLAMING ME,
like i mentioned earlier didn"t mean to offend anyone. and if I were an evil person I would tell you to GET A LIFE!!

I had the same problem when I switched to a VOIP service for my house. From what I remember it works for some people and not for others. I read posts about changing the dialing prefixes so that it will connect at slower speeds like 9600bps. I tried all those and was still not able to connect my series 1. I ended up buying a ethernet adapter from the 9thtee (HERE (http://www.9thtee.com/tivoupgrades.htm)). Actually i got the cache card but its the same as the cheaper turbonet adapter. I know $70 to get your tivo working again sucks, but just think of how quickly the VOIP will offset those charges.

BTW Tivos stance on VOIP: HERE (http://customersupport.tivo.com/LaunchContent.aspx?CID=22D33D52-1494-4AA2-8F1C-06E334702DA6)

Edit... Oh.... i wrote my post assuming you had a Series 1. If you have a Series 2 then just disregard everything I said in the first paragraph. :o

Just get a wireless adapter and connect that way. No need for a phone at all.

Unless you have a friendly or oblivious neighbor with an access point, a wireless adpater by itself won't help if you don't have a wireless network to connect it to.

HELP!!! I have Vonage and have been unable to set the phone options to successfully make a daily call since we switched. Any ideas? We actually have DirectTV with Tivo service. I've tried everything and need any help someone could give me. Thanks :)

i have a series 1 that i connect over my optimum voice phone all the time with no issues. Originally there was an issue and i just brought a dsl/broadband filter for the phone line and that resolved it.

ok so I have no idea what that is, but I can find out. Is it something I plug into the DVR and then the phone line goes in that? I'm clueless when it comes to stuff like this and Directv is zero help on this issue.

I'm clueless when it comes to stuff like this and Directv is zero help on this issue.Since you mention DirecTV I believe that you have a DirecTV receiver with TiVo. If that is the case then you cannot connect to the internet with either a series one (No USB ports) or a series 2 (Has USB ports)

You can hack a series 2 DTiVo to enable networking (See the Zipper)

You can add a card from http://www.9thtee.com/tivoupgrades.htm to a series 1 to connect over the internet.

Or you can, if you have a PC nearby running XP or WIN2000 that connects to the internet, use PPP over serial. PPP works for all TiVos.

Of course the DTiVos do not need to call in at all as they work just fine without making any calls. All that happens you get nag screens about phone calls and you cannot order PPV through the remote but you still can order PPV through DTV's WEB site.

As far as the DSL filter; Yes it goes between the TiVo and you phone line but success with ANY VOIP service is problematic at best. While some people can get successful calls through various service many many more cannot.

all of the sudden When my Tivo calls in it says call interupted, but nothing new has happened to a dedicated fax line that it is connected to, still send and receive faxes. I have tried to call in am and pm.

I had the same problem when I first bought my Series 2. Vonage was somewhat balky, and I actually couldn't hook up to the network until I had made a successful phone connection to upgrade the software which would allow the network connection in the first place (Catch-22). Ultimately I applied some tweaks to the network settings and was able to get a decent enough phone connection to do the upgrade. Then I moved to broadband networking and haven't looked back since. (You get a lot of extra features when you network.) Here's a thread on getting TiVo to work with Vonage: http://www.wilkinsons.com/Bananna/2005/07/using-tivo-with-vonage-or-any-voip.html .
