I am moving and called DTV because I use VOIP and will not have a landline anymore once I move. They offered to give me two R15's (for $49) because they do not need to be hooked to a phone line I have 2 samsung DTIVOS... Will I hate the R15's or should I go for them.. (they are 100 hours, I have an 80 and 40 hour tivos)

THANKS

Hmmm, have you tried searching the gazillion & one posts about NOT needing landlines on D-Tivos. (you don't, BTW, so I'm not why you even want to entertain the thought of dumping your D-Tivo's, but to each his own...  )

Check the following links for much discussion of the R15.

If you do decide to try the R15's, hang onto your Tivo's, even if you de-activate them, in case you decide you prefer them over the R15 (which will probably happen).

I have read you do not need it, but a nagging message appears from what I saw. I will read about the r15's....

Thanks

Yes, & you simply click SELECT & it skips right by it - you will find out that VERY minor annoyance is preferable to going to the "dark side" of the R15's... :D
Good luck on whatever you decide...

Nearly all of those with DTivo experience strongly dislike   :( the R15s - just put up with the nag screen, or use The Zipper (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=265929) to modify your boxes so that they no longer even desire to make a callout.

Note: DTivos don't use the phone line for guide data (as do SA Tivos)... it just wants to call the mothership to dump PPV info that you order with your remote.

If you have no phone line do not use the remote for PPVs; instead order them through your DirecTV web account page. This will also cause the purchased PPV to be on all boxes in the account and not just on a single box.

There is another alternative to hacking with the Zipper or any other method that involves removing the disk from the TiVo if you have a PC nearby running XP or Win 2000 (Vista is not yet tested but probably works as well) and that is PPP over serial.

PPP replaces the TiVo side of the phone calling with a call through the PC and the internet. This call is the one that produces the nag screens it is for viewing data and activating new software and a few other things. However it does not enable PPV ordering with the remote as that requires a different call to a DTV 800 number and that call can only be made through the phone line.
