Hello all.
My Directv DVR, Philips DSR704, has started acting up. I'm trying to decide what to do.
When traversing the menus, it is very slow. Sometimes going from one screen to the next, it will sit there for several minutes before the screen comes up. I talked to Directv. They suspect the hard drive. They'll send me another one (R15) if I pay the shipping costs and commit to a two year contract. I don't want the 2 year committment or the R15.
I went through the process of clearing everything and reformatting the hard drive. It didn't help. I'd like to go ahead and replace the hard drive if I can get some degree of confidence that it is the problem.
My concern is that the problems only occur when going through the menus. For example, I can select the now playing list (or to do list) and I will have to sit there for at least 3 to 5 minutes before it will come up. Once it comes up, I can manage to work my way to a recorded show and play it (takes quite awhile). Once I'm able to play a show, then it plays just fine. No problems at all when watching the show, just when going back to the menu to do something else.
If it is the disk drive, does it make sense for the menu traversal to be such a problem, but then to have no trouble once watching a recorded show? Seems that if the drive were failing, the shows would be choppy, cut out, not play at all, etc.?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.
