Does anyone know if I can get my existing TIVO box upgraded to be HD compatible with a new plasma I just purchased without having to buy a new unit?

There is no process for upgrading a Series 1 or Series 2 TiVo so that it will record and dsiplay in HiDef.

Not only that, but neither the S1 nor S2 will record any digitally-broadcast signal so even the digital standard definition stations are toast.
That said, I'm really happy with my S3 :-)

S1s and S2s can record from cable boxes, and that includes digital cable boxes.
Such boxes can be set to work with analog TV devices.
The S1 and S2 TiVos most certainly can record programming from a digital cable system.
It's just that they need the picture to be downconverted to standard def to do that.
