Is it possible to record one channel while watching another with DirectTv satelite box? I've tried setting it up, but unsuccessful.

Yes, if you are talking about a DirecTV DVR (either the TiVo version or the newer NDS version) as long as you have two satellite cables fed into the unit directly from the dish or from a multiswitch, and you use the setup option for dual operation.

You can also be recording two programs and watch a previously recorded program at the same time.
