I have been reading for a long time, but excuse the BASIC question. I did read the faqs.

I have a Series 2 with Lifetime. I understand it is for the life of the box. What can I do to "backup" the hardware and or software to ensure the lifetime will continue.

Is backing up the HD and/or upgrading enough? Is there code on the "system" board if there is such a thing.

I have good PC skills (e.g. built PC's etc.)

If you could point me in the right directions I would appreciate it.

The lifetime status is in an eprom on the motherboard and has nothing to do with hard drive. Also making sure your unit is registered with TiVo will keep the lifetime info in their database.

Thanks for the reply.

I assume the motherboard/eprom is less likely to fail than the HD. So, a backup of the drive would be a good starting point?
Thanks again.

The most common component to fail in a TiVo - like in a computer - is the hard drive.

Having a good backup of your drive is an excellent idea, though in a worst-case-scenario, there are images and backups floating around you could probably get your hands on.

I've also heard of the power supply failing, but you can get a replacement from Weaknees.

Other stuff can fail too, including the motherboard/eprom. Just like on a computer. Then I think you're screwed :b

The Lifetime status is stored on servers in r near Alviso California, and tied to the TSN and system keys, which are stored on a chip on the motherboard. What you can to to prolong the life of the TSN is OT here, beyond preventing the system board from dying.

Invest in a really good surge protector, or better yet a UPS.
Make sure you have a surge protector on the cable tv line coming in too
