Forgive me for posting something that has probably already been answered. I have read so many posts on so many different sites that I am having a hard time keeping it all straight.

I have a hughes sd-dvr40. It started pausing for like a second at a time then continuing (during playback and live tv). Once the shows were all deleted I tried the clear and delete everything option. It was stuck on that screen for over 48 hours before we finally tried every way of rebooting. It just goes back to the same screen. Bad hard drive is the obvious problem. The questions are:

If I am lucky enough to find an image online can I put it on ANY hard drive or only one of 40 gig or higher?

If I get instantcake will it work on a smaller drive or only 40+ for this tivo? The reason I ask is that I have spare 20gig drives and a 200gig drive with nothing on it yet. I would prefer not to use the 200 if I can avoid it.

Is there some other option out there for getting an image onto a new hard drive? Other programs or whatever. I haven't decided whether or not I want any other software options or not. It would be nice to be able to network the darn thing. I found the thread from StanSimmons about sending him a pm for a link to an image, but his pm box has been full for days.

Thank you in advance.

You can buy a DTivo image for $20 from ptvupgrade.com.

I wouldn't bother with installing the software on a 20gb drive, as it would hardly give you 15 hours of recording time.

Downloaded instantcake and got instantcake from ptvupgrade. It was really easy. Now I just hope it all works for a while.
