View Full Version : UDMA66+ / 80-pin cable support on a Philips TiVo Series 1?

Would performance improve if I managed to install an 80-pin cable on a S1? One of the pins is blocked off, but I could always make a hole... think it would kill the drive?
It has been probably a decade since I thought about UDMA33 vs UDMA66+. 2 drives on that 40-pin cable must really kill performance...

There's no downside to using an 80-pin cable
However I don't think the TiVo's IDE controller would take advantage of it. I seriously doubt you'd notice any difference.

The difference between the 40pin cable and the 80pin cable is that on the 80-pin cables, each connection has its own separate ground; on the 40-pin cables, the ground is shared.
The 80-pin cable is required on devices which are rated at higher speeds/frequencies because the noise/shielding on a 40-pin cable will not allow data to travel reliably.
Its unlikely that the 80-pin cable will make any difference at all in an older unit; just as putting 94-octane fuel in a 1974 Toyota Corolla won't make a difference, either.
With that said, I did have an audiophile once tell me that the audio on his upgraded Series1 unit sounded BETTER when he used the 80-pin cable vs the 40-pin cable. The only logical explanation I could think of that is that the 80-pin cable is shielded better, and that less electronic noise in the unit might translate to a better analog signal coming from the TiVo.
Either that or the guy was smoking something...
You decide...

80 "pin" is incorrect. 80 wire is what it is, and as meant, every other wire is grounded.

I stand corrected; I meant wire, not pin; I'm sure that is what the original poster meant; aside from that, my original response is the same.
