You will need to use it unless you are happy to risk the vagaries of the Tivo IR Blaster which sends a signal out of the plastic widow on the front of the box that also receives the IR signal from the remote. This normally only stands any chance of working reliably if your Set Top box is right on top of the Tivo and above the IR window and even then only if your Set Top box is one exceptionally sensitive to IR signals.

On the whole the IR blaster is not reliable and channel digits etc are often not received by the Set Top box even though it may get it right some of the time. This is why you need to use the IR leads and place the IR prongs on top of your STB with the IR bubbles pointing out in front of your STB IR window.

You can get a set of new IR leads along with the sticky pads to fix them to a set top box free and for nothing by calling Tivo's 0870 customer service number. Incredibly its the one thing they still seem to be any use for as they don't have stocks of the remotes or anything else. I can only assume they have a massive box of a couple of thousand of them and that over the years hardly anyone has asked for them. They sent me a set the other day as although my old set just about works (of course I told them they don't work at all) the plastic plug that goes in the back of Tivo is half split off from the lead after it got pulled one time when I took the Tivo to relatives for xmas. So if you need a set of leads call Tivo customer services for them.
