I suspect this is not possible since IDE drives have the concept of cable-select for master/slave function. But what I am wondering is if there is such a thing as an IDE cable joiner. In other words, I have an IDE cable in a linux box that I do not want to unplug from the mother board. I have an IDE cable in my HR10 tivo that I do not want to unplug from the drives. If there is no drives plugged in to the linux side cable, I would like to be able to plug the normal drive connector from that cable into a joiner and then plug the IDE cable from the tivo into the other side of the joiner.

Does anyone know if such a gizmo exists? I did a few searches and came up blank.

If I understand you correctly you are looking for an IDE cable with male connectors on both ends. There's no reason one can't exist, but best not use them with cable select cables. The only one I could find with a quick search is here (http://search.mycableshop.com/cables/Idc%2040) and I think it's a do-it yourself kit. Be careful of the overall length though, to long isn't good.
