I have 2 D*TV HR10-250s that have the 6.3a software download(and all the problems:audio dropouts,partial recordings,freezeups).
I'm not computer savvy enough to do the InstantCake retograde to 3.1.5.....but I can handle replacing the HDrive with one from WeaKnees. Will this fix the problem with 6.3a.I understand that their drives come with 6.3a,but is it a "clean" drive that will be free of problems? Thanks!

Well, from where I sit I can tell you that you do, in fact, possess the necessary skills to use an Instantcake image.
If you get a Weaknees drive then you'll still have to install it in your HDTivo. The same holds true when you perform an Instantcake install. Installing a drive in your PC isn't any different than installing one in a Tivo.
You have to type in commands when running the Instantcake restore. Since you're posting here I'm guessing you know how to type. You should be able to find out what commands you need to type in from the Weaknees or PtvUpgrade websites. Weaknees has an interactive tutorial on performing drive upgrades so you might want to start there.
The only real computer skills you'll need is to be able to enter the setup screen on your PC and configure your CD-ROM drive as the first boot device. The users manual that came with your PC tells you how to do this. You will also have to know how to download an iso image and burn it to CD-R. Set up the PC to boot from the CD and test it before installing your Tivo drive. The rest is pretty much automatic.

I was with you until the last paragraph.I have removed and installed hard drives before. But it simply involved setting the jumper to cable select and plugging in the IDE and power cables.I still had a master drive to boot the system.
I guess I need to find a neighbor who's familiar with this stuff!Oh,my computer's manual is worthless(couldn't even call it a manual)Thanks for the reply!

When you first boot the PC, do you see an indication at the bottom of the screen that tells you to press Del, F8, or some other key to enter setup? If so then press the key when you see the indication and it will take you to the setup screen.
Depending on what BIOS you have installed on the motherboard, the way to access the boot drive sequence will vary. You will usually find it listed under the advanced tab, which is usually the second item in the main menu on most PCs. Look at the bottom of the screen to see what keys are used to change the parameters. You can navigate between the parameters using the cursor keys.
Options are normally changed using the + or - keys or possibly the Page Up or Page Down keys, as indicated at the bottom of the screen. You should see a parameter to set the first boot device. Note the current boot device setting as you may wish to return to this setting when you're finished working with the Tivo drive. Simply highlight the option and cycle through the various drive selections until it displays CDROM. Exit the screen using the appropriate key (as displayed on the bottom of the screen). Once you've returned to the main menu, exit and save the settings. The PC will reboot with the new settings in place.
Place the Linux boot CD in the CD-ROM drive and reboot. If everything was set correctly you should boot into the Linux screen as previously described.
