View Full Version : Hinsdale Link Wrong?, Upgrade Not Looking Good

I have a Series 2 (24004A), and about 2 years ago added a 160gig "B" drive. I used the MFS Tools 2.0 image. Everything went very smooth. Now I'm replacing my original 40gig "A" drive with a new 250gig, and things are not going so smoothly.

In the Hinsdale How-To (http://www.newreleasesvideo.com/hinsdale-how-to/index9.html), there are two links for the ISOs. The first link, which it says is "For most model TiVos..." is to the file MFSLBA48.zip. I downloaded and burned that image, but when I boot from it, after all the linux messages, the final screen shows:
****************************************************
* PTVupgrade LBA48 Utility Disk Version 1.0 - Series1 Units Only *
****************************************************

The second link in the How-To, "If you have older Series 1 models you should use Mfs Tools Boot Cd" points to MFSTOOLS20.zip. Is this correct? Shouldn't the links be the other way around, i.e. the "most model TiVos" be MFSTOOLS20.zip and the "older Series 1 models" be MFSLBA48.zip?

I'm also having a problem getting my drives recognized. My Windows 98 drive is jumpered as master and cabled to primary master, the current TiVo "B" drive is jumpered to slave and cable to primary slave, and the current TiVo "A" drive is jumpered to master and cabled to secondary master. When I boot the machine (an old Dell Dimension I've kept just for this purpose), the BIOS shows the 3 drives, but once Linux comes up, I don't see the drives reported at all. In fact, the only drive reference I can find is that hdc is my CDROM!

Thanks for ANY help with this. The last upgrade went so smoothly...

The MFSTools 2.0 boot CD is only for series 1 Tivos. You should be using the LBA48 boot CD for your series 2 model. They both contain MFSTools but one boots in byteswapped mode and the other doesn't, depending on which Tivo version you have.

Thanks for the response, but seeing the "Series1 Units Only" message from the LBA48 boot really makes me nervous. As I mentioned above, I had done the previous upgrade with MFSTools 2.0 and it worked fine.

I have figured out why the drives are not being recognized. The CDROM is plugged into the IDE controller on the motherboard, but the 3 drives are plugged into an add-in IDE card. Evidently, Linux doesn't recognize the add-in card, so it doesn't see those drives. Does anyone know of a way to get Linux to see that extra IDE card?

For some reason, the folks behind that site decided to take a copy of our CD and host it on their own, and I guess what is there is somewhat dated.

Try using the CD referenced in this thread, instead:

LBA48 CD version 4.04 (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=198444)

Thanks for everyone's responses, but I finally got this upgrade moving along.

I remembered that when I did the previous upgrade, I used the two IDE ports on the motherboard and not the ones on the add-in card. Once I hooked the drives up there, I booted using the LBA48 boot CD from the link in Hinsdale's How-To and the drives showed up as expected. I just got through doing the backup of the old "A" drive and restore to the new drive, and testing it in the TiVo. I'm now running the "dd" to copy my old 40gig "A" drive to my new 250gig "A" drive.

BTW, I'm making copious notes this time!!

Thanks again to everyone!

The Hinsdale instructions are somewhat dated, but I believe they give you the best help for the configuration that you are trying to upgrade.
