View Full Version : Freezing/stutter on one tuner only...still a drive problem?

Hi, my old Hughes 40gig has developed a freeze/stutter problem, but it's only on one tuner. (tuner 2, specifically). When I switched in a different machine, everything was fine on both tuners, so the problem is definitely in the box, not a wiring or dish issue. Everything I've read about freeze/stutter problems suggests it's almost always the hard drive, but does anybody have any experience with this sort of problem? Is it still likely to be hard-drive related even though only one tuner is involved? Thanks!

My Hughes did that, it was tuner 2 that was faulty. No way to fix it either.

I have had my unit for 2 years now, and it just started freezing and stuttering. As well as my to do list disappearing and programs under search by title are not showing up. From what I have read I believe you are right about this being a software bug, being downloaded to the systems. Is there any way we can stop this???? I had no problems until I started ordering movies from paper view with the remote. Please help as Direct TV will not!!!

You can always try a "Clear and Delete Everything", but I'm betting your problem is indeed a failing hard drive.

Who said it was a software bug? It sounds like a failing drive like Dkerr24 said. The only way to fix that is to replace the drive.

Hi, the last few answers here have been not been to the OP (my) question -- anybody have any experience with a one-tuner stutter as described in my opening post? Or does anybody have any theories as to how a drive problem could affect just one tuner?

Thank you, much appreciated.

I had this, and there are dozens of others here and there. It has been positively identified as a problem with the second tuner (not software, not hard drive).

Some have had success by not using the S-Video connection, believe it or not (some sort of short between that connection and the second tuner?) I haven't had a chance to try this on my own (currently inactive) unit.

The original post sounds more like a tuner problem but I thought I share my headache in case anyone else out there runs across it.

I experienced the stutter/freeze problem on one of my HDVR2's. The first thing I did was to swap it with one of the bedroom units and it worked for a while but then, same problem. So I changed feed cables, hard drives, multiswitches, power sources, and whatever else I could think of but still, the problem returned. Finally I tracked it down to the S-Video connection (and some stupidity on my part).

It turns out that during each step of the process I wasn't immediately reconnecting the S-Video cable so a lot of my original diagnosis was wrong. Finally after fooling with it for several weeks, I realized what was happening. When I disconnect the S-Video cable from my Yamaha RX-Z1, the problem goes away. I further discovered that it only happens when the Yamaha is turned off. So clearly there's some interaction between one (or possibly both) of the tuners and the S-Video connection as the previous poster mentioned.

The lesson for me was to be more careful when diagnosing performance problems like this.

Good luck!

Using the HDVR2 S-Video output definitely caused problems for me. The picture quality instantly improved once I disconnected the S-Video output and switched to the composite output.
