View Full Version : Multi-Switch Question

I tried to look some of the other multiswitch threads, but couldn't find anything that fit my scenario.
I have the Oval Directv Dish with 3 LNB's. I don't have HD. I have one Philips DS704 and one standard receiver I'm trying to hook up.
I have two cables coming from the satellite that I connected to the 18V and 13V inputs on my SAM-3402 3x4 Multi-Switch. I connected two of the ouputs to my DVR and one to my other receiver. My DVR was working ok except when I got to the local channels where it said I had to call for ordering information. And my other receiver said that I had an invalid access card (though that may be a whole other issue) Directv told me that the receiver was bad and sent me another one, but I have a feeling it was the multiswitch. Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

Do you get your local channels from the 101 satellite, or from the 119?
Normally, with the 3-LNB dish you need to run all 4 lines between the dish and the multiswitch (using a 4x8 or 5x8 multiswitch). If you only run two lines then you will only have access to the 101 satellite.
However, with the equipment you have, you don't need to use a multiswitch at all. Simply run three lines from the dish - two to the DS704 and one to the regular receiver. Make sure you do the 3-LNB oval dish setup.

Well the dish isn't round and it has 3 of the receivers on it which I thought were reffered to as LNB's.
I checked the Satellite strength and I receive a signal on all 3 satellites (101, 111, 119) and I only have 2 cables. Does that mean that there is a multiswitch up on the satellite or something? It's not easy to check since it's up on my second story roof which is very high. Therefore it's very difficult for me to run a 3rd line if I needed to.

Yes, the 3lnb dish has a built in multiswitch with 4 outputs.

If you need signals from all satellites, then you will have to run the third line from the dish. As long as you are there, run the fourth line.

I need 2 more lines for a 3rd tivo. You will need a cascadable 4x8 (or 5x8) multiswitch. You will run all four lines from your current dish to the multiswitch and make runs from the multiswitch to your receivers.

Thanks for the help, I don't know why Directv didn't run all 4 lines in the first place. I'm going to call them and try to get them to do it.

Thanks, whats a good place for a 4 x 8 switch, and will this work with my OTA

If you need OTA then use a 5x8 cascadable switch. The fifth input is to diplex the OTA antenna. Then diplex at the TV.

I think this terk (http://www.hometech.com/video/dssmulti.html#TE-BMS58) might do.

That's what I've got.
Keep in mind, it does run abnormally hot, so mount where it can get some air flow, and can't damage anything.

Im guessing that is the OTA input on the side of the switch.

More like the power connection, it is a powered multi switch, 24 volts.
I don't have OTA running through it, I've never been a fan of diplexing.

Are their 5x8 multi switches that do NOT require an external power source. Running power for this terk switch is not going to work for me.

http://www.solidsignal.com/prod_display.asp?main_cat=02&CAT=&PROD=WB68
This requires no external power and it will work on the AT-9 5LNB so if you upgrade to HD and the AT9 you won't have to get a new switch.

However, the WB68 doesn't diplex OTA.

However, the WB68 doesn't diplex OTA.But you still can diplex OTA with an external diplexer.
