I have 2 tivo 40gb units, not modified at all. One drive has crashed. My question is can I use an image of the drive from the other tivo to load another drive and get this working again? Or is there "default" image that we can download from Tivo somewhere to put on a new drive.

Just curious...my drive is not bad yet, but if (when) it fails, will I be able to just buy a drive 'preloaded', so to speak, so that all I have to do is unplug the bad one and plug in the new one, boot the Tivo and go?

My slave drive went bad, and I don't have the cash right now to replace it. How can I get the Tivo up and running again?
I have a backup on my server, but can't quite figure out how to get mfstools restore to see the backup file.
Thanks!

You can buy preloaded drives from the store on this forum or from weaknees.com. You can also get Instantcake from ptvupgrade.com and load your own hard drive.

Your best bet is to boot the computer that you are using for the restore to Windows (without the TiVo drives connected). Copy the backup file to the C drive on that computer. It is easiest if you copy it to the root level of the directory structure. Then boot the mfstools boot CD. Mount the drive where the backup is. Restore from there. These instructions should help you: http://tivo.upgrade-instructions.com/index.php

The point in asking for model #s is that unless they are both TCD240xxx or both TCD540xxx etc. you can't copy the software from one to use in the other, but if they are the same, copying the good one to replace thebad one will work just fine. You will have to do a clear and delete everything after installing the new drive in order to get the tivo software to work properly.
The exception to the same model rule is that the TCD140xxx and TCD240xxx models use the same software and are usuable in the other model.

Thanks for the response both of the units that I have are TCD540040 model #s.
Is the "Clear and Delete" a function from the Tivo menu?
Thanks again, your confirmation was greatly appreciated.

Clear and delete everything is in one of the menus under settings.
