I'm trying to buy Tivo for a friend for Christmas. When I try to order it (and select gift), it takes me to a screen that says 'Choose a service gift card'. I'm not buying the service for him, but it doesn't seem like I can order without buying a 1 or 3 year service gift card.

Is that correct? There's no way to get to the checkout screen unless you select one of the plans.

Thanks,
Dave

That may very well be true. After all, what good is a "gift" Tivo without a service subscription?

I'm not used to $180 + $199 = $379 gifts at Christmas. I guess I'll get them something else.

If you have your heart set on a TiVo then look on eBay. They have new series 2 units for around $50 shipped all the time.

You can get the TiVo hardware elsewhere... like store.tivocommunity.com and everywhere else, if you just want to buy the box

Where do you get the $180? The box is free if you buy the 1 year gift card.

Maybe OP meant $170. Being nice and giving a gift of 180 HR DT.

180 hr DT Tivo is $169 and the cheapest service card is $199 = $368

I called Tivo and if you buy from them you have to buy a gift service card in order to get their cheaper prices.

Thanks everyone.
