I have an old series 1 has worked fine. I now am in an apartment and want to avoid the cost of a land line. I have a lifetime subscription and would like to be able to continue to use it. This unit doesn't have a USB port. Is there any way to avoid the cost of a land line?

All I can offer is that an S2 is free with subscription. Then you'd be able to use a broadband connection.

I've got a wired turbonet card in my old Series1 and it's been working fine for years. I don't have any experience with the wireless version..

Installation is painless, just physically install the card, cut a hole to run a cable through if applicable, and enter ,#401 as your dialup number. There you go - no more land line.

if you are comfortable with this type of work, this is probably a real good bet.

Or if you have a PC nearby with a connection to the internet you can use PPP over serial for all the calling functions a TiVo of the stand alone TiVos.
You can use a pretty long cable; I am using a 40 ft. cable with no problems.
I have the same question, in that I don't have a phone line either.
I'm looking at purchasing a used unit with a lifetime subscription. If I buy a Series 2 w/ Ethernet, do I just plug it into the hub and go? Will the unit get the programming schedules and everything?
If I get a Series 1 lifetime and want to upgrade the hard drive and add the ethernet card, is it pretty straightforward?

The series 2 only has a USB connector. You need to use a USB-Ethernet adapter or a wireless USB adapter to get it onto your network. If you don't get the TiVo-branded wireless adapter you have to be careful about the model number and hardware version number that you get - only certain versions of certain models are supported.
An S1 is less strightforward.

This is what I do. The modem in my S1 is fried and this works really well. I'd recommend drilling a hole in the cover of the S1 though. Which I am too lazy to do. But without it, you have to keep the cover slightly off.

I cut out some of the cooling holes for my ethernet cable from the turbonet card.
My Series 1 worked fine with the turbonet card without a landline.
Do y'all have a reccomendation, then, for a new user without a box? I expected that a lifetime unit from eBay would be the smart buy. I'm very comfortable opening the unit and making changes. If you were jumping straight into the TiVo world, what would you look for?
