View Full Version : Recording 2 digital cable shows in a row?

I had an issue this past weekend with trying to record a series of shows on the same digital channel one after another.

I was watching DIY network and they had 5 episodes on building your own home theater. I set Tivo up to record them. I was also watching them. Once the first episode ended, Tivo did something weird. It seems like it tried to change channels on the other tuner to record the next episode, but since I was already on a digital channel it couldn't really do that. I hit the Live TV to flip tuners and it said it was recording the next episode, but was actually some other basic channel. The guide said it was channel 121 in this case and was recording what should have been the 2nd DIY episode, but was actually recording some other basic channel.

I have overlap protection set, so as I understand it, it should be able to end any conflicting shows early to pick up the next one. I also did not have any minute buffers set on these recordings.

I can see how this might mess up since you can only record one digital channel at a time and if one show ends on the hour and the next is suppose to start on that same hour, then something would have to give.

So is this a bug or shouldn't I be able to record consecutive shows on the same digital channel?

If not, how should you go about recording consecutive shows on a digital channel?

Thanks

There's no problem recording consecutive digital (cable box) shows on a single tuner TiVo, either on the same or on different channels.

What series TiVo do you have? Unless you have a Series 3 I'm confused about your setup.

BTW overlap protection clips the lower-priority show, not necessarily the earlier or the later one.

I have a series 2 DT.

If I understand, you have one input connected to the box and the other directly to a coax line.

Is there a way to designate the non-box input as analog cable only? Probably you've already done that but it seems that the TiVo hasn't figured that part out.

The way it should work (I guess you know this) is that the TiVo should record both shows using the cable box since the 2 consecutive programs are on digital channels (the same channel at that, but the TiVo should be able to figure out that the shows don't really overlap even when they're on different channels).

Did you pad the shows by a couple of minutes by any chance? End one late or start the other early?

Sorry, guess I should have included these few details. Yes, I have a splitter right out of the wall. One goes to the Tivo Box and the other to my digital box. In the Tivo channel setup I have uncheck all the channels below 100 on the digital line, so only cable channels for 1-99 and 100+ digital. No over padding was set on these particular recordings.

I guess I should try it again to see if it will repeat the error. It did however do it on the first two episodes at which point I just cancelled the recordings and sat and watched them and manually recoded them.

Even a little more info, my cable is split out of the wall. One goes directly to the Tivo, the other to my comcast digital box, then to the Tivo.

...but the S2DT has a single coax input - I'm guessing the connection from the cable box is audio/video cables:

Yes, digital cable box to Tivo are RCA cables.
