Just placed my order with Dish Network for a free HD DVR and better HD programming package. Been with D* for over 4 years and giving Murdoch my money was distasteful enough but with the end of TIVO and not even having an HD DVR in stock (let alone expecting $300 from me) the decision was easy.

I love the way people that have never met Murdoch talk about him like they write him a personal check every month. The man is the CEO he doesn't actually run the company himself out of his garage.

But I think everyone agrees they should have held the HR20 back for a few more months and ordered a few more HR10's in the mean time. But having been happily with DTV for over 10 years I'm inclined to give them a few more months to work out the bugs.

I actually HAVE met him. Nice fella, it seems. I had a momentary chat with him at the unveiling of the Gilbert, AZ ASkyB uplink center (which ironically ended up going to EchoStar in a lawsuit) along with the guy who ended up as president of ABC Entertainment for a while (Preston Paddon, I think). I think they gravitated to me because I was running the FOX SNG truck that particular day, and no other media showed up (and our reporter hadn't yet arrived).

Actually, I think "Rupe" is as fed up with DTV as some of us are. Don't be surprised if News Corp peels DTV off to Liberty for stock holdings pretty soon.

He never did let me see the inside of his garage, though. :)

I switched and we don't miss DTV at all. The 622 has run flawlessly and the HD has been phenomenal so far. After having Comcast, then DTV, and now Dish, I see no reason for brand loyalty, they don't give a crap about me. It is whoever has the best offer for our needs that will get our business, that simple.

Amen brother!

As for Rupe, no I haven't met him but I don't have to to know him to be a right wing creep who has done more to screw up this planet than most people. Don't bother flaming and I am not trying to start a political discourse here. Just responding to a smarta$$ remark.

Ironically, DISH, who once offered one of the comparitively-worst DBS PVRs out there is now offering the exact same PVR, except that with Tivo's HR10 now out of the picture and the HR20 a complete turkey, that same PVR rises to the default status of being the "best" DBS PVR available. Smooth move, DTV. Way to kill the golden goose.

I think Billy's just busting balls. No harm, no foul. But apparently it takes someone who can make a smartass statement to recognize a smartass statement. :)

I can't disagree with your perceptions, however. Although relatively speaking, I can think of quite a few "right wing creeps" who have done so much more to "screw up this planet" that they make Rupe look like Al Gore.

What I find both sad and laughable here is that you think what you said might possibly be considered part of "discourse".

Don't be sad my child, just read "not meant to be discourse" again.

Funny, I thought this was a DTV / Tivo forum.

Don't be sad my child, just read "not meant to be discourse" again. If I were your child, you certainly would have received the emancipation suit legal papers by now.

On your recommendation I did read it again, and now here is your chance, and everyone else's, to read it one more time....I am not trying to start a political discourse here. Your statement obviously says that what you posted might be mistaken for political discourse. I really don't think that conclusion is a giant leap.

Taken as a whole, your statements included one statement that was very political, by definition. Adding a weak disclaimer that you don't mean it to be political sounds kind of like this statement: "I don't want to say anything to rile you up, but brother, is your sister ever ugly."

But even if your statement might not be considered political, that you can't seem to make the simple distinction between what you meant your statement to be and what you admonished us not to mistake if for (and which part of that I was responding to), I find now even more sad, even more laughable.

But that's really OK. No one's perfect, and both of us have proven that on occasion. No worries.

I was sitting at my desk a few weeks ago and this smallish, older, guy who I thought looked a little like Rupert walked by. I jokingly said to the person sitting next to me, "Hey, Rupert's here."

The next day, I found out it really was Rupert. I think he is smaller than I expected.

He isn't even the CEO of DirecTV! He has a minority, albeit controlling interest in News Corp, which in turn owns 31% of DirecTV!

It may well be that News Corp sheds DirecTV entirely in the very near future. After all, it was Murdoch who called Satellite TV a "turd bird." He very much wants News Corp to shed DirecTV ASAP!
