They ceased production on it about a year ago but they are still plentiful on ebay. You may be able to get one through DirecTV but I wouldn't hold your breath. There are lots of them still being sold that are new in the box and lots more of the used ones available. They're starting to gradually hike back up in price vs. what they were selling for just a month ago, probably because many people are becoming disgruntled with the HR20 and want something that works more like a Tivo.

Based on recent posts here and at other forums, it looks like DirecTV no longer stocks any HR10-250's, even for replacements. Defective HR10-250's are being replaced by new HR20 HD DVRs. Weaknees and other online resellers still have them, though.

If you call paying $799  for a stock HR10-250 "having them" then sure, weakness has them...

Guess it all depends on how badly you want one. Some of us paid more than that when they first came out.

Still, you could buy 4 of them on Ebay for about the same price...

My HR10-250 died last Monday and D* sent me a HR20 as a replacement under their protection plan. I got it on Wednesday and it was DOA. I call D* and they shipped out a replacement for the HR20. I got it Friday and it was a HR10-250 with 3.1 software. It is working great so far.

I had to have two HR10-250's replaced under the protection plan. One had a bad optical connection and the other just would not take 6.3a. One came refurbished and the other was new in the box. Both worked perfectly.

I bought my unit two years ago from Value Electronics with the 5 year protection plan. Has anyone had to go down that route to replace a defective unit. If they don't have any units left and can't get them, what are we going to receive if our unit breaks?

Unless you really don't care about HD it would be a bit foolish at this time to spend money on the HR10. In less than a year there will be HD channels available from DTV that you won't get with the HR10. Possibly less than a year. By then the HR10 will be virtually worthless for resale.

It still will work for OTA with a DirecTv subscription.

But how many people will be happy recording and watching only the major networks (OTA) when there are dozens of other channels available in HD? Personally I really like college football. If I couldn't get ESPN in HD I would be looking for another solution. So while it may still record OTA HD what good does that do somebody?

DOZENS? HARDLY!
DirecTV carries 7. Plus HBO-HD, Showtime-HD, and PPV-HD. That's 10. Note even ONE dozen!
Out of that, the ONLY useful HD channel in my opinion is ESPN-HD and HBO-HD. Sorry, but I'm not paying $10/mo to watch ESPN and old reruns of Knight Rider in "HD".
My OTA gives me 7 channels that broadcast HD contents, them same amount as the DirecTV hd "package" with far more useful contents...

"Worthless" may be too strong a term. The only new HD channels I've seen announced that aren't locals are HD shopping channels. Maybe there were others announced that I'm not aware of, however.
Since I already get the major networks in HD from D* in my area, and CW-HD, WB-HD and PBS-HD via OTA, I'm hopeful my four HR10's will last me well into the foreseeable future.

The HD channels they carry today and what they will be carrying this time next year are two very different things. DTV has stated that in 2007 another satelite is going up that will enable them to offer 150 national HD channels as well as all the HD locals they are currently rolling out. So a year from now you might get 50 HD PPV channels as well as every current movie channel offered in HD. The point is I don't know what they will carry on those channels but it will look better in HD no matter what channel it is. IF it happens as they say, no one will want the HR10 12 months from now.

To clarrify:
They have stated that TWO satellites will be launched.
To give them the capacity for 150 channels...
They have yet to state WHAT will be using that capacity, be it locals/nationals or what.

Earl, do you have *any* information on when we may see some inkling of what the first national HD MPEGs will be (that most of us will care about)? Because, as was said, so far I don't care about what's rumored to be MPEG4. Locals are better and more of them by OTA, and with no press on what's coming in the future, there's no reason to even think about getting an AT9/new MS/HR20 (gag :) ). HD shopping?! No, thanks.
Does D* know they are shooting self in foot by keeping everything so secret? Not even saying that "by fall '07, Discovery HD and HDNet [I AM MAKING THIS UP!] will be MPEG4", for example?

And while you're at it Earl, if I buy a new AT9 dish does it come with the LNB's to pick up the new sat's? Or will I have to have them added later? I am assuming the AT9 can handle all 7 sat's.

Good question. I'm in the same boat. Any answers here?
