View Full Version : 704+Slingbox question

I've been thinking about adding a slingbox to my 704 so I can easily stream to my home office PC (rather than paying for another box, which is pointless as the two units are never in use at the same time.) This seems like a smart thing to do, as it would save me cash on the recurring and give me some cool functionality (TV while traveling etc.)

I'm looking at the Sling AV w/ my DTivo, but this model doesn't have a pass through (looking at this over the original as its supposed to have a better LAN side picture). I feed my small bedroom TV via S-video.

I could do 2 things I think:

1) use a S-video splitter and pipe the analog audio to the sling. That's ok, as I use the optical out from the Dtivo to my bedroom AV receiver.
2) use the composite video output to the Sling and the S-video to the TV.

I'd think that option 1 - assuming that would work) is a better option.

Anyone ever split an S-video connection out of a Dtivo and seen it work? Or, does anyone have this model Sling hooked up w/ a TV as well?

I've asked on Sling Community- no real response yet. I figure this is just as much a Dtivo question as anything, as from the Sling side, it just needs a signal.

There are other methods to stream Tivo shows to your computer using your series 2 DirecTivo - for a lot less money than a Sling Box. If you have a PC with 2 IDE channels, are comfortable installing hard drives in a PC, can burn a CD and typing in a command line doesn't scare you away, then check out Tivo Zipper (http://www.mastersav.com/tivo_zipper.html) - it's discussed in the Tivo Underground forum here Tivo Underground (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=8)

Assuming you've already got Ethernet connected to your PC, the cost is $5 for a CD plus a supported USB to Ethernet adapter $25, plus a couple of hours of time.

Once the Tivo Zipper is installed, you'll be able to watch shows on Windows 2K/XP or Mac OSX 10.4

In response to the Sling specific question, using the composite video to feed the Sling will work just fine, and will give you just as much video quality as will the S-video feed. I would certainly do that before trying to split the s-video feed.

Check www.slingcommunity.com for a number of forums on Slingbox.
