Hi,
I have 2 HR10-250 Tivo's in the same room. I have the black peanut remote that came with one and an RC23 direct tv remote that came with the other. My question is simple. Can I somehow set up these remotes so they don't both work both tivo's at the same time? I called direct tv and they assured me they cannot.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
-Bob

Try this online manual.
http://www.directv.com/learn/pdf/System_Manuals/DIRECTV/DIRECTV_HR10-250.pdf
Page 125 of that PDF file.
And you need to do this for both units.

First, cover the receptor on the DVR with which you want to use the RC23, so that what you do does not affect that recorder. Don't worry, it'll take only a few minutes. Although, come to think of it, you may have to do the same for that one as you're about to do for the other one, if both remotes are currently set to remote address 0 (zero). So, anyway, after making sure that no remote activity is affecting that one, by blocking its receptor, do the following with the other DVR and remote.
Go to the Tivo information page that shows the remote address, under Messages and Settings, Information. You may have to page down a couple times to see the word, "remote". Once you do that, here is what item 7 from this page http://customersupport.tivo.com/LaunchContent.aspx?CID=5f88b6b5-995a-4324-a302-1c62e0adc25d says:
To reset the remote control address:
# Hold down the PAUSE and TiVo buttons for 5 seconds, until the red light on the remote comes on.
# Use the number buttons to enter 0. A remote control set to remote address 0 will control any DVR.
HOWEVER, instead of hitting 0, because you don't want to control all your DVRs with the same remote, hit a 1 (or 2, etc), while aiming it at the DVR. This remote should now control ONLY that DVR.
Test it while the other DVR's sensor is still covered.
Cover this DVR's sensor, uncover the first one's, and this remote should no longer operate that one. However, your RC23 remote will probably still operate both, because it's probably set to zero.
So, you may have to do the same (or similar) steps to change that one to a different number.

Jim,
Thanks but I still have a problem. I did it for the peanut remote and have tivo set for 1. Now I try rc23 remote and nothing happens. How do I change the remote address for a rc23 remote? Thnaks, -Bob

So, the RC23 no longer controls its DVR?

no the rc23 will control both dvr's. I try to push the pause and tivo button on the rc23 but it doesn't work. I assume there must be another way to set it.

You may have to find the website for the maker of that remote (from your post, it sounds like it's not the usual peanut, correct?)

You can not control two tivos independently with RC23. The only tivo codes on board are for address ZERO. Which controls all peanut remote controlled tivos no matter what address they're set to. Pressing Tivo & pause doesn't work on universal remotes, only tivo oem remotes.

I would like to take a moment and thank you for trying to help. The problem is the RC23 remote only has one setting and cannot be changed. I took an old peanut remote from a bedroom tivo and the problem is solved. Thanks again, -Bob

One more possibility: one remote, two TiVos. If you check under the TiVo Gear section of TiVo.com, you'll find most (all?) of the replacement remotes they sell are set up to control two different TiVos. They have a slide switch just above the number keys to switch between two different IDs. It works well, very convenient.

Is your RC23 remote a learning remote? If it can learn codes, you can correct the issue. What you need to do is program the peanut for two different addresses, such as 1 and 2 for your two receivers. You then would want to learn all of the remote commands from each peanut separately. It will take a little time to do this, but once you do it, it can control each. I have a mx-700 and this is what had to be done to get around this quirk. So hopefully the RC23 can learn!
Edit: Just looked up this remote. This is not a learning remote. My above suggestion won't work for this model remote.
