R10's don't need to be connected to a phone line. You may have to take it to where there is one for the initial setup. DirecTV (I assume that's who you meant) wants new subscribers to use their newest non-TiVo based DVRs (the R15). The R10 is by no means "obsolete" or "worthless".

I hear there are many people that bit the bullet and upgraded to the R15 after using an R10 previously. Most say it's the biggest mistake they've ever made and prefer the R10s hands down.

I have 2 R-10s. One in my bedroom, one in the living room. My roommate has an R-15 in his bedroom (I had the DirecTV account before I moved in with him and talked him into getting a DVR for his room). He went against my advice and got the R-15, and now is trying to figure out a way to get an R-10 without having to pay through the nose for it. Point is, the R-10 is a vastly superior piece of hardware. You only need a phone line for the initial setup, and if you want to order PPV through the unit. Otherwise, stick with the R-10s and be happy you have them. Sorry this post is kind of all over the place. I'm still kinda drunk right now (it's 4:39AM here on the west coast), and I felt the place where I should be right now is on the TiVo forum. Well, night.

I really appreciate the info. I hooked one of them up last nite and it's loaded wth movies and kids shows and the like...so can I assume the "initial setup" is done??Can I have them activated and not have them need to "call" tivo ever again??

:D

Yep, looks like they're already activated. Just be sure that the dish type is set to match what you're actually using. And hopefully they didn't set any passwords that they've forgotten.

You should be able to activate them DirecTV just fine, provided they don't have any outstanding balances due.

thanks all....DTV has informed me that there are no balances due on the boxes/cards. When I get back with DTV after the holiday how should I approach getting them to set them up on my account?I got a facefull of ATTITUDE the first time I called.

Can they activate using my existing cards??
Can I still order PPV online?or by phone??

Thanks....

dish type?? mine is a round one with 3 LNB'S ???? help

No home phone connection = no PPV via remote, however, you can order PPV on the DirecTV website. Your dish should be fine (it's actually oval). Just make sure that all four lines are run from he dish. If you need more than four lines you need to add a cascadable 4x8 multisiwtch.
