I just received my replacement S3 due to what Tivo and I thought was a hardware problem with my other S3. My problem still exists though.

When viewing LiveTv or playing back recorder programs, I need to pump up the volume on my HDTV from 20 on the volume scale to almost 40 (depending on the station) and also, when commercials come on the volume almost goes back to normal.

I do not connect my Tivo through my AV system because I don't want to annoy the neighbors with nightly TV watching though my large speakers. My TV is a Panasonic 16:9 HD with five excellent speakers. I am using Accoustic Research gold plated cords for all my AV connections. Tivo sound is the only component I have a problem with.

Anyone else have this problem? It occurs on analog as well as HD signals. Thanks.

I get this problem only when watching CBS.

I have similar issues, would be nice to have some sort of volume normalization, at least on recorded shows.

edit: Also, anyone else notice echoes especially in commercials?

On the AVS forums, I've heard some people complain about issues like this when watching HD content. I can't say that I've ever experienced this, but perhaps this is your issue:

It sounds like the problem could be your local affiliate, not the Tivo. I think a good way to test would be to turn on your 5.1 surround system (if you have one), and see if suddenly you can hear everything ok.

Yeah - definitely a source problem. Lobby them to stop raising commercial volume in a last-ditch, desperate attempt to get our attention!

I noticed some sound problems as well as channel problems on my S3. I called comcast and they determined that the signal was weak to my S3. It turns out that what I thought was an amplifier wasn't really working properly. It look likes different channels have different strengths causing different problems like missing channels or even dolby digital to fail.

I would suggest you guys double check that.
