Local Radio Stations: In 'Channels You Receive' ?

Hi,

As part of my digital cable package, I have access to my local radio stations in addition to the music plus channels. These channels are numbered in the high 900s.

Do these channels show up for selection in the "Channels You Receive" List on
the S3? I have a Motorola 6412 and while the radio/music stations don't show up
on any of the TV listings page, if I press "Ch Down" while on Ch2, it puts me on the highest numbered radio station.. I'd like to be able to see the call letters/freq
number of each station by simply looking at the Tivo guide instead of changing
the channel each time..

Here, the FM stations show up in the guide and Channels You Receive identified as "RADIO961", "RADIO962", etc. The guide info just shows "Radio Channel" with no call letters.

In San Francisco the FM radio channels do show up in the TiVo Guide, but I'll have to check later when I am at home to see specifically how they are identified.

Curiously, my TiVo S3 will not/is unable to record these local FM radio stations.

Does anybody know if this is due to some sort of "do not record" information in these particular channels, or is it simply due to the fact that there is only an audio signal with no accompanying video signal? My TiVo S3 WILL record the cable Music Channels which do have accompanying video (i.e., slideshow graphics).

I wonder if you contacted TiVo thru the "channel lineup page" that'd do any good?

Give them the info, and they may update your lineup. Two or three days later, the updated list should be available thru Guided Setup.

I conducted an experiment to see if I could record the FM channels. If I pressed the record button it would not record and gave me the error bong. But if I used the guide, I was able to schedule a recording in the future ok. The playback worked fine and showed the green background you see in the NPL while the audio played. While viewing the recording, the record button worked to allow me to stop the recording.

I don't know how practical it is to be able to record the FM channels but I guess if you wanted listen to a specific program it would be handy. Manual recordings should also work but I didn't try it. The program guide is divided into 4 hour blocks, each with the title "Radio Channel".

Works fine for me in the Seattle area (comcast). I record Car Talk on the local PBS station 94.9 on Saturday mornings at 9:00 am. Season Pass - no problems. I also have no video just the blue TIVO background shows. Been doing this since I got the S3 in September.

When I got home (San Francisco) this evening, I conducted my own experiments and sort of got the same results that hiker got:

1) If I press the record button with my S3 tuned to an FM radio channel, I get the error bong.

2) Unlike hiker, I cannot use the S3 guide to record an FM radio channel in the future because there are no future FM radio programs -- there are only current FM radio programs. That is, each FM radio channel is listed in the guide as one continuous Regular Schedule listing with no start or end demarcation. If I press the select button while in the guide with any FM radio program highlighted and at any time (current or future) , I get the error bong. I cannot even use the S3 guide to change the channel to any FM radio channel. (I again get the error bong.) I can only go to an FM radio channel by entering the FM radio channel number directly or by surfing to it. (Update: Oops. I just discovered that I CAN use the guide to change to any FM radio channel if I highlight the desired channel in the leftmost channel ID column and then press select.)

3) However, I was able to manually schedule and have the S3 successfully perform a recording of an FM radio channel at a manually specified future time. Although my screen is black when the S3 is tuned to an FM radio channel, I do get a green/blue TiVo screen on playback of a recorded FM radio channel.

4) And to answer one of the OP's questions, here in San Francisco, all of the 30 FM radio channels available via Comcast cable show up in the S3 guide with the appropriate FM radio station call letters (e.g., "FM-KQED" on cable channel 960). That's nice.

I too now plan on using this capability to regularly record Car Talk. Thanks for all of your comments and observations!

This is with a scheduled manual record of 1/2 hour and/or going for the full 4 hours. When doing the full 4 hours then the Tivo stops recording around 55 minutues... strange.

Any ideas?

Uhh....Y'all realize that you can record FM straight from the air - right?
It even comes in STEREO.
AND you can play the recordings in your car, etc throught this thing called a 'cassette tape'. :D

A 'cassette' what... ?? How about a device called an iPod. Who the heck has a cassette recorder these days... let alone one that records like a Tivo or even has a cassette player in their car?

If you record a lot of radio, a VersaCorder works a lot better than trying to get Tivo to record it, move it to your desktop and then to an iPod...and a heck of a lot cheaper!

Not to mention the VersaCorder allows you to change the batteries, unlike the overpriced iPod. :D
