Well, I've upgraded my 540040 twice before, and now the master drive has "pissed the bed." It won't even boot. I fix computers for a living, so I know this drive is dead.

The last time I went through this was probably two years ago. Are there new methods in place now? I previously used the Hinsdale method and it seems that's still the way to go - right?

I have a hard drive (*somewhere*) that has a backup from the last time I did this. Do I need to find that? If I can't find it, what then?

Is there any data recovery possible from the slave drive?

I currently have a 200 and a 250 Maxtor Quietview (or whatever it's called) that was recommended back then. Should I just replace with one 500GB, or maybe even 2 300GBs? Is there a limit? (There were times that I wish I had more space with the 450GB...) I see the DB35 is now recommended, but hard to find. Is there a second place recommended drive?

Thanks!!

If you can recorver the A drive, you the B drive can be save, otherwise the B drive's content is lost.

If the A drive is dead, you will not be able to recover anything from the B drive. You will need the backup you have to restore to a new drive. Otherwise, get Instantcake from ptvupgrade.com.

One drive is better than two drives in a TiVo. Less heat, less chance for failure, less load on the power supply, etc.
