I am looking into upgrading to a Series 3. I called my cable company to find out about obtaining the cable cards. They told me that I would have to buy them and they would cost $125 each, does this sound typical? Can you buy cable cards anywhere else? I would have to install them myself and contact them with the numbers.

Isn't very often that they ask customers to buy them, but on this forum it's not unheard of. I highly doubt you're goint to find them anywhere outside of your cable provider, though... last I heard, they haven't gotten to the point of cable modems where you can just buy them at a store and call in to activate them (which is probably because the option/requirement to buy the cards is so rare... even if they could get them, what store would keep them in stock?).
It's not unheard of, but it's certainly not typical. The vast majority of cable companies rent cables cards for $1.50 - $5.00 per month.
$125 for purchase seems a tad high, but borderline reasonable.

Where a community member reported that CableCards were only available from their cable provider via purchase ... for $125 each ...
People should REALLY include location info - so tech-savvy people know which neighborhood to avoid moving to ;)
I have nothing further to add, the others covered it all and provided the link to the other discussion already.
