Hi,
I'm a long time TiVo user (summer 2000) and I'm looking to upgrade so that I can view shows recorded on the TiVo in the basement, in the bedroom. I've spent many hours last night and this morning reading stuff here and on TiVo.com and am completely confused as to what I should do. It seems things have become very complicated... I'd really appreciate some advice :)
I currently have the following:
Unit 1 = lifetime subbed HDR212 with 300 hours (dodgy modem requires I connect the phone cord just as it's starts the dialing sequence or it fails but I've been using it this way for a year now)
Unit 2 = SA HDR212 (modem even more dodgy than in unit 1)
I called TiVo this morning and Unit 1 was purchased just a couple of months after the grandfather clause cutoff so I can't do the free lifetime transfer. Unit 2 they say I can't lifetime sub any more (I've read conflicting stuff on here about that since it is an old unit that was eligible at one time).
I was tempted by the $199 fee to transfer to an S3 but I found out the S3 won't do multi room viewing. Is it true that MRV isn't an option?
It seems to me that I have two options with option 2 looking more attractive. Please let me know if I've misunderstood anything;
Option 1 = Buy a 9thTree TiVo cachecard with SDRAM for Unit 1 and a 9thTree TiVo TurboNet card for Unit 2 and run ethernet cable throughout my house (since I'm worried that my wireless network would be too slow). This would cost ~$200 plus wiring and I'd keep my lifetime service. Unit 2 can be reactivated. The downside is how much longer these 6 year old units have left in them and all the hacking involved.
I must be really dumb because the second unit costs seem just crazy.
Why is 1 year prepaid ($199/12=$16.68) more expensive than 1 year monthly ($13.95)?
Why is 2 years prepaid ($299/24=$12.46) more expensive than 2 years monthly ($8.95)?
Why is 3 years prepaid ($299/36=$8.30) more expensive than 3 years monthly ($6.95)?
Why is 3 years prepaid the same price as 2 years prepaid ?
Option 2 = Get two new DT Series2 180 hr units. There seem to be way too many pricing options :(
From a retailer like Buy.com I can get a Series2 DT 180 for $145 after the $180 rebate. I could buy 2 and sub them both as extra units for $6.95 / mo each, assuming I keep my lifetime Series1. This works out to be only $100 more up front and $6.95 more per month than option 1 and I get 2 brand spanking new S2's.
TiVo themselves seem to have a lot of package deals but unless I misunderstood they don't seem to be a better deal - as long as I keep my lifetime S1.
Help !!!
Thanks :)
