View Full Version : Insert view vs. pause

In another thread, people were complaining (again) about the fact that the TiVos do not have an "insert view" when in the menus (I mean where the show playing gets put in a tiny window in a corner while you mess with the menus.

I never got the tuner insert view. I paid good money for my large HDTV. Why would I want to watch part if the show in a tiny window where I can barely see whet is going on? In the old days of live TV, it made sense, cause otherwise you miss something. But with a TiVo, I would rather have it pause while I do stuff and then go back to where i was. For those of you who like it, why do you?

Our Moxi has that, and it's good and bad.
The good is that I can listen to something like the news while I'm going through the guide looking for upcoming shows or movies I might want to record. The way the Moxi navigation is set up this task can take a lot longer than it would on a TiVo, so it's nice to have something else to listen to.

The bad is that sometimes when we turn the TV on to watch a recorded show, another show will be recording and you might get exposed to a spoiler or two. No, not the end of the world, but still not optimal.
Oh, the another bad thing happened to me a few days ago - I was deciding which show to watch and the live tuner was on whatever channel around here shows the Maury Povich show. I had to listen to several seconds of "Who my baby-daddy?" before I could pick a show and play it.
That one left a mark.

Hmm, hard one to explain if you haven't seen it/used it. If you are watching a critical recording, yes you freeze it to go do something, like add an SP or recording. But a lot of times, you are just watching something that's not critical, and the ability to keep it running while you check the guide or To-Do list is handy.

Check my sig, I have every DVR known to man :D . The S3 TiVo beats 'em all hands down. Makes the UI on the SA8300HD look like a '90s video game. But there are a couple features I like: (1) Free Space Indicator, (2) the little insert window while using the guide or Lists.

See, that's the thing. I have had it, in the past (or when I am at my brother's who has some other DVR), and I just don't care for it. Sort of like PIP. When I had live TV only, it was an amazing thing. Now that I watch pretty much everything recorded, I do not miss it one bit.

Here's how I handle that. On my Pronto TS1000 remote, for my two TiVo macros, I always have the "TiVo Button" as the first command. That way, once the Receiver is turned on and tuned to the right input, and the same with the TV, the TiVo should be at TiVo Central (I think) if it was recording a program.

I think its good for live tv watching (you can do stuff during commercials, etc, and not have to worry about missing stuff). But its bad when it spoils what you were planning on watching later (sports, etc). So it really depends on how you use your DVR. I have it on my Moxi, and personally don't really like it because I rarely watch tv live and I hate not being able to hit the TiVo button before turning the TV on (to prevent spoilers).

Then that's fine, don't use it (if it ever becomes available).

I have 2 Tivos, and still use PIP *very often*. Often I'll be watching something in the main screen, and then skimming the To Do list or guide listings on my other Tivo in PIP. With my orig TV's remote, I could have the audio from the PIP be what's played, but I can't seem to do that with my replacement remotes (orig remote is 99% dead.. it works once in a while).
