I've read the various pricing threads and I'm still a bit confused and want to make sure I understand things....

Let's say that today I go out and buy from TiVo a 180hr S2DT for $169 and also pay the $299 for a pre-paid 3-year commitment.

Now let's say that a year from now I decide to de-activate/sell/give away that TiVo and buy a new TiVo at retail and transfer the balance of the commitment to the new box (it's my understanding that I'm allowed to do that).

What's my penalty for doing so? Is it simply being ineligible for whatever rebate is then currently available on the TiVo I buy a year from now?

The reason I ask is that (a) I'm pretty sure I'll be using some TiVo for at least three years, so I'd like to lock in the lowest rate, (b) I'm more and more thinking I'd like some dual-tuner capacity now but don't want a S3 at the moment, but (c) may well buy a S3/S3.5/S4 a year or so from now.

You will lose the rebate if it is like the current rebates offered which state something about requiring a new activation. Otherwise there is no other penalty.

And what are the mechanics of transferring the commitment from one box to the other? Can it be done via tivo.com's "Manage My Account", or do you have to call a CSR?

You can do it online. It is a link on the left side that says change service number. This is of course after you login to manage your account.
