Well, that's interesting...

I don't really know what else to say, but I am looking forward to next week's episode now.

Yeah, TV Guide spilled the beans, but I'm looking forward to this one.

Maybe they can call her Swarley Sparkles. :D

The only problem I have with this is:

That if Robin is in her late 20s (assume 28 from the Myspace), then she would have been 10 years old in 1988. I'm assuming 1988, since that was the time of Debbie Gibson and Tiffany, which this seems to be at. I should know...I attended a couple of Debbie Gibson concerts at the time.

That doesn't stop it from being funny, though!

Well, she is Canadian, so they might be a few years behind the trend. :D

Before she got all angry, Alanis Morissette was just plain "Alanis" and she was the Canadian teen-pop equivalent of Tiffany and Debbie Gibson. That was around 1991.

Cobie Smulders is only 24, so even if Robin Sparkle was the poor Canuck's Alanis, she would still have been a preteen in the early 90s. Judging from the clothing and musical style in the video, it looks like she "Sparkled" in the late 80s/early 90s.

I was reading over at EW that this was the producer's thought as well. He said the Canandians are always behind. The video is supposed to be from 1993.

That would put her at 15 at the time, which would work.

It's *really* stretching the time frame. But, with the 'Canadians always behind' remark... lol

(I attended my last Debbie Gibson concert in 1991, when that whole thing was winding down)

I noticed that too! In fact, I was just on her page, watching her appearance here in my hometown San Diego earlier this year.

And since we're fessing up to having seen Debbie Gibson in concert, I saw her in '87 or '88 at the Concord Pavilion in NoCal. My buddy's dad's friend was the head of the box office for that venue, and he got us seats in the very front row (orchestra pit). That's right, I touched Debbie's hand. Multiple times. :o :D

"Smoke/Drink: No/No"

Given all of the bar scenes on the show, I'm not too sure about the accuracy of the last part of this answer.

Alanis ROCKS! Sorry, a little OT, but she's my favorite singer and any mention of her is awesome! ;0)

I don't get the connection between the Robins...I feel like I'm missing something. Was this just a "funny, haha" kind of coincidence, so we're joking about it, or is it something they're connecting with the show?

Sorry, it's very late here and I'm exhausted (just got home from a Clint Black concert), so everything's probably just going over my head, which means I should probably be in bed instead of trying to read and post. :0)

This is the plot description for Monday's episode from CBS.com:
Monday, November 20, 8pm et/pt

Slap Bet

Barney uncovers Robin's secret past and the real reason behind her strong aversion to malls.
I'm sure we'll get the full story on Monday.

Assuming Robin and Cobie are the same age, she would have only been 11 when the video was made in 1993.

We were doing the math above. If you assume that Robin is 28 (based on the myspace page), she was born in 1978. That would put her at 15 in 1993.

Aha! Thank you!! I figured it was because I was so tired and not thinking clearly, but I just hadn't read the plot description yet. That makes much more sense now...too funny! :p

So does anyone know if this is a for-sure thing for the show? I didn't think the two Robins looked anything alike.

Here's a link to the Entertainment Weekly story (http://www.ew.com/ew/report/0,6115,1560056_3_0_,00.html) about it.

Sorry, I missed the age thing on the MySpace page. After all these years of actors playing characters who are much younger than their actual ages, it's strange that Robin is at least 4 years older than the actress who plays her.

It's a catchy tune, and I like the random "Canadian" references thrown in: "I'm going to rock your body till Canada Day", and "I turned around and who did I see? Prime Minister Brian Mulroney." The funny thing about that is that a lot Canadian "Pop" music does that, with random Canadian references thrown in for no apparent reason other than to make sure the audience knows the singer is Canadian.

And if you're already realizing something not quite adding up math-wise, don't worry, Robin was supposed to have shot the video back in 1993, since, as Thomas points out, ''the '80s actually didn't make it up to Canada until 1993.''
Sadly, there are some parts of Canada where the 80s never left, but I don't think that's exclusive to Canada.

Too bad they didn't make her from Saskatchewan instead of Vancouver. Barney could have had a lot of fun with the name Regina.

That link did a good job of explaining a few things. And if the Canadian references weren't enough to let you know that 'she's Canadian', the way she pronouces 'about' and 'sorry' at the beginning of the tune (or overpronouces them) will get ya.

ETA: I LOVE HIMYM's use of the internet. :D

ironically, the best use of the internet with a TV show is on Canadian tv.

http://www.regenesistv.com/indexframeset.html

Is the front link to an entire web world tied to a TV show of the same name. You get all kinds of extra content from the web sites which can completely change from week to week as the audience solves some of the clues. I heard a Podcast all about it a few week back.

So, back on topic. I think this was well integraed but they should have actually shown the myspace stuff to really sell it.
