today the cable company came and installed dvr and said i couldn't use my tivo also. i have been playing with their dvr and not that happy so far (after a few hours). is there any way to have both tivo and hd/dvr via the cable?

Couldn't you just split the cable and send one to the cable dvr and the other to the Tivo? If you have multiple inputs to your TV, you should be able to do this. The only downside to this would be you wouldn't receive your digital channels on the Tivo.
Also, if you really don't like the cable dvr, why not just return it? Did you sign a contract?

I *think* I was able to use my TiVo through the cable dvr. I set up the dvr the same as you would set up a cable box.

If you use a CableBox/DVR combo as a cable box feeding a TiVo, the TiVo may be able to change channels on the cable box, but the cable box will have to stay on that channel.
If you try to use the box to record at the same time the TiVo's recording, they'll be recording the same show, and any control displays that pop up on the screen as you operate the box will end up on the TiVo's recording.
If you want to use both a TiVo and a CableBox/DVR at the same time, the sensible thing to do is split the cable, and feed both the TiVo and the DVR with their own separate cable runs.
The TiVo will only be able to record any analog channels there are, but it'll be independent of the cable box, and the cable box will be able to record any channel it can get, digital and otherwise, without bothering the TiVo.

Out of curiosity, what software is on the box?

I installed my SA DVR's (Time Warner) last weekend. As mentioned in a subsequent post a splitter is the way to go. Not enough time has gone by for me to totally dislike the DVR, but at this point they will be the primary recording machines due to being able to record in HD. If TiVo lowers the price on the HD DVR I will look at purcharsing one.
