What does that mean? How can there be 2 million broadband subscribers, but only 500,000 actively on?

My only guess is that the 2 million is really just broadband internet users, not people that have hooked their box up to a broadband network. Does that sound right?

That 4.5 million number is somewhat miss leading last time I looked there was only 1.5 million Stand Alone users the rest were Direct TV. A more useful number might be how many Stand Alone Series 2 & 3 TiVos they have connected through broad band.

Sounds right to me. (though I didn't watch the 50 minute video :) )

What's missing is the % of the 4.5 million Tivo subscribers that have Broadband capable Tivos (ie non-s1/Dtivos)

I would think it means either the box has network access but the downloads are using a phone line, or
The user is using the broadband connection for guide updates only but hasn't opted for any of the other content.

I think it's a pure demographics statement. That is to say, 2 million of the TiVo subscribers have broadband Internet. And only 25% of those actually connect their TiVo to said broadband. The other 75%? Either they can't (Series1 or DTiVo) or they simply choose not to, either actively or because they don't know that they can.

The speaker said during Q&A that about 80% of the active broadband users are using things such as TivoCast, Yahoo Weather & Traffic, Live365, etc.

I agree. It was interesting to me that he said that many of the Standalone updates are meant to show the Cable companies what is possible, especially with broadband access. It seems they are trying to convince all the cable companies to license the Tivo software and not make the mistake that Directv made by not allowing broadband access.

All, I know is that the tivo wireless adapter was/is selling like hotcakes. Made the top 100 in electronics at amazon for a bit and then the rankings went bad. I suspect there has been alot of growth in broadband connected tivos recently, and the trend will continue.

He said that of their 4.5 million subs (which would include DTV), about 2 million had broadband capability (but that seems high, as they only have about 1.5 million standalone subs, and some of those must be the older boxes). He said about 500K were connected using broadband, and that about 80% of those used at least one broadband feature per month.

Watching it now. Fascinating. Really gives an insight of how the question of web video on TV is talked about within Tivo, and how Tivo plans to leverage delivery to the TV.

So are they saying of their 4.5 million subs, 2 million have broadband in their homes- OR- of their 4.5 million subs, 2 million can hook their TiVo to broadband and get HMO/HME services right now?

If it's the former then it's demographic. And seems very low. Since I beleive more then 1/2 the US has broadband and Tivo folks would probably skew higher due to income and tech savy attirbutes.

If it's the latter then that would be odd since it does sound like more then the stand along s2&s3 units.

I wonder if maybe they are counting in the hacked Directv and S1 units with broadband access? Could that account for descrepancy.

After looking at it again, I think he means 2 million broadband-enabled boxes sold, which is about right, considering churn. Of those, he says about 500K are currently connected via broadband. He discusses how for some things this is a very small audience, and for others it is a very large audience.
